IALA International Association of Landscape Archaeology (IALA)

International Association of Landscape Archaeology (IALA) is an association under formation aiming at promoting interdisciplinary research in the field of landscape archaeology. IALA will provide a platform for archaeologists, cultural and earth scientists and researchers from neighbouring disciplines to present and discuss results from this broad field of landscape research between the sciences a

nd humanities. Building on the tradition of the previous Landscape Archaeology Conferences held in Amsterdam in 2010, in Berlin in 2012, and in Rome in 2014, IALA will be officially launched 23-25 August 2016 during the 4th international Landscape Archaeology Conference in Uppsala, Sweden. IALA aims at values of higher interdisciplinary education, expert and scientific research with emphasis on young scientists and mentors and explores possibilities of use of European funds for higher education purposes. The activities of the Association are directed toward mutual collaboration of all scientific institutions, professors, teachers, assistants and young scientists in the European Union area and wider. In order to establish a long-term collaboration between all researchers in this interdisciplinary arena IALA’s mission is to bring together all people involved in landscape research with a multi-disciplinary agenda. IALA aims to bridge the divide between sciences and humanities through higher education of young people, publications and supervising and promoting bi-annual conference organisation in order to establish a long-term sustainable development in interdisciplinary Landscape Archaeology. As the first step to fulfil this intention, IALA invites you to join the Association, become its active member in contributions, and/or be informed on a regular basis about the activities of the Association.

IALA was represented at the 2025 ECLAS conference in Nitra (Slovakia), titled agriCULTURAL landscapes - 30 years of landscape architecture education in Nitra (https://virtual.oxfordabstracts.com/event/74267/program). Landscape Architecture has always been about understanding, managing and designing the landscape, so it is a natural fit for Landscape Archaeology of any type. Future collaboration between IALA and ECLAS is being planned, so make sure to stay informed.
I hope to see ECLAS represented in Bamberg for LAC2026 (https://lac2026.com/).

A Sentinel 2 picture from August 13th reveals the extent of the wildfire destruction in the UNESCO cultural landscape of Las Médulas (Spain).
The beauty and majesty of the largest Roman gold mine as it can be seen today, inmersed in a sea of chestnut trees, has been terribly devastated due to a problem which is endemic in many places of Southern Europe. Drier and warmer summers, together with an increasingly abandoned countryside, have become a terrible combination for some of the most delicate landscapes.
In addition, this tragedy hits close to home...and heart.

If you haven't already, take a look at this excellent article from a few years back in the then-new Journal of European Landscapes (AUP). Archaeology and management going hand in hand, at the pen of Tom Moore, Vincent Guichard and Jesús Álvarez-Sanchís.
