CONCERN FROM THE COALITION OF CIVIL SOCIETY ON REVENUE GENERATION AND SERVICE DELIVERY - SOUTH - C.R.S.D.
CONCERNS OVER REPORTED PLANS FOR A WOMEN'S STREET PROCESSION IN BO CITY
The Coalition of Civil Society Organisations, acting on behalf of concerned citizens of Bo City and, by extension, the people of Pujehun, Moyamba, and Bonthe Districts, wishes to express its concern over widespread reports that a group of women intends to stage a public street procession in Bo City similar to one that reportedly took place in Kenema some time ago.
While we fully recognise and respect the constitutional rights of all citizens to freedom of expression, association, and peaceful assembly, we equally believe that the exercise of such rights must not undermine public safety, public order, economic activity, or the rights and freedoms of other citizens.
Bo City is widely recognised as the second city and commercial hub of Sierra Leone. It is home to a diverse population comprising traders, students, workers, professionals, transport operators, and people from all walks of life. Any activity that significantly disrupts the normal functioning of the city may have far-reaching consequences, not only for Bo but also for neighbouring districts in the Southern Region.
Our concerns are therefore rooted in the following:
1. *Public Safety and Security*
The maintenance of peace, security, and public order remains a primary responsibility of the Sierra Leone Police. Large public gatherings, if not properly managed, can create security risks, traffic congestion, and public disorder, thereby affecting the safety of residents and visitors alike.
2. *Protection of the Rights and Freedoms of Others*
The Constitution of Sierra Leone guarantees fundamental human rights, including freedom of assembly and association. However, these rights are not absolute.
