Building a Weapon-Free Abyei Through Community Engagement

As part of the ongoing awareness and community engagement efforts in Abyei, UNPOL Abyei Teamsite conducted an awareness campaign with members of the Abyei Community Protection Committee (CPC) and Corrections personnel on the importance of maintaining Abyei as a WEAPON-FREE ZONE.

The engagement focused on strengthening awareness, responsibility and community cooperation in preventing the possession, movement and misuse of weapons within the Abyei Box.

Key areas discussed included:

• Promoting a culture of peace and peaceful coexistence.
• Strengthening community responsibility in maintaining a weapon-free environment.
• Preventing the illegal possession and movement of weapons.
• Encouraging timely reporting of suspected weapons-related incidents through appropriate channels.
• Enhancing cooperation between community structures, corrections personnel and UNPOL.
• Supporting conflict prevention, public safety and the protection of civilians.

A weapon-free Abyei is not achieved by enforcement alone. It requires partnership, awareness, responsibility and the collective commitment of communities and security stakeholders.

UNPOL remains committed to working with the CPC, Corrections personnel and local communities to promote peace, security, dialogue and peaceful coexistence throughout Abyei.

Together, we can build a safer and more peaceful Abyei.
