SUMMARY REPORT: COMMEMORATION OF INTERNATIONAL DRUG DAY
FREETOWN –
At the Miatta Civic Center, Freetown, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency-Sierra Leone(NDLEA-SL) joined other law enforcement agencies across the world to commemorate the United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking under the global theme, "World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, and Innovative Responses."
Various speakers from government institutions, Non-Governmental Organizations, and Civil Society Organizations reaffirmed their commitments in the fight against illicit drugs in Sierra Leone.
The Honorable Minister of Internal Affairs server as the Keynote Speaker and delivered a powerful keynote address tracking Sierra Leone's decade-long battle against devastating synthetic substances like kush, highlighting strong government interventions—including the destruction of millions of dollars in seized narcotics at TOCU headquarters, rehabilitation for drug victims, and law enforcement raids led by the Special Presidential Task Force on substance and drug abuse —while expecting a renewed collaborations with the UNODC, UNDP, and the Chinese Embassy for capacity building intervention for the agency.
The high-level gathering also featured crucial insights from the Honorable Deputy Minister of Health, who reaffirmed the state's public health commitment to rehabilitation, as well as a passionate plea from Civil Society advocates urging the government to equip the frontline officers of the NDLEA with essential operational vehicles to increase mobility and successfully dismantle trafficking networks.
Under the strategic guidance of the agency's Executive Director and Deputy Executive Director, the event beautifully combined robust inter-agency solidarity from TOCU, RSLAF, and SLP with creative public sensitization, utilizing local entertainers to deliver easy-to-learn educational messages to rows of vibrant secondary school students, teachers, and guardians who stand as the true protectors of our nation's drug-free future.
The successful commemoration concluded with a profound expression of thanks to all partners whose vital backing made the event possible, leaving all attendees deeply unified in their resolve to protect Sierra Leone from the threats of organized crime and substance addiction.

NDLEA and Partners Conclude Walk for a Drug-Free Society Ahead of World Drug Day 2026
FREETOWN, Sierra Leone – June 20, 2026 – Today, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), in collaboration with its partners, successfully concluded the "Walk for a Drug-Free Society." The walk commenced at the Stadium Bus Halt and concluded at Aberdeen Beach, bringing together citizens from various communities in support of a healthier and safer Sierra Leone.
The event is part of a series of activities marking World Drug Day 2026, which is observed annually on June 26th. The walk served as a vital platform to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse, promote prevention, and encourage young people to make healthy, responsible choices.
This initiative reflects the Government of Sierra Leone’s unwavering commitment to tackling the growing drug challenge and protecting the well-being of its citizens, particularly the youth.
The NDLEA expresses its sincere appreciation to all partners, government institutions, civil society organizations, the media, youth groups, and members of the public who participated in and supported the walk. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), National Public Health Agency (NPHA), and Ministry of Social Welfare have successfully conducted school engagement sessions across Freetown.
Our School and Community Engagement Tour is charging forward with incredible energy! Building on the massive impact of the first two days, day three allowed us to break new ground, combining the strengths of our multi-agency alliance to deliver life-saving prevention education to thousands more young minds.
Today, our team of dedicated officers and specialists hit the ground at Methodist Boys High School, Wellington Muslim Association Secondary School, Oxford International Secondary School, King Fahaad Secondary School, Limount college, Constance cummings jones secondary school, Government Rokel Secondary School, Government Model Secondary School and Government Independence Secondary School.
At every single institution, the student response was absolutely inspiring. By blending real-world enforcement insights, vital health guidance, and essential social support, we tackled the hard truths of substance abuse head-on, empowering students to challenge peer pressure and actively look out for one another.

Day 2: School & Community Engagement Tour 🛑📚
Our School and Community Engagement Tour is moving with full momentum! Following an incredible start, day two was all about broadening our reach and taking our vital drug prevention message to thousands of students across the city.
In the West, our officers visited Prince of Wales, Freetown Secondary School for Girls, St. Joseph's Secondary School, and National Pentecostal School. Our outreach also covered the East and Central zones, where we engaged with students at Annie Walsh Memorial Secondary School, Government Municipal Secondary School, Sierra Leone Muslim Congress, Sierra Leone International Mission, and Ahmadiyya Muslim Secondary School.
At every single stop, the energy was incredible. We spoke openly with the youth about resisting peer pressure, identifying the devastating dangers of substance abuse, and understanding their massive role in protecting their peers.
Our schools are the foundation of a safer future, and these powerful conversations are paving the way toward a completely drug-free generation. The tour continues tomorrow! 🇸🇱🤝✨

We officially kicked off our School and Community Engagement Tour in lead-up to the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking!
For our very first day of school outreach, we visited St. Edward's Secondary School and St. Helena Secondary School. Our officers engaged directly with the students, talking about the dangers of substance abuse, the power of making positive life choices, and how they can help lead the charge toward drug-free schools.
We also took the message straight into the heart of our neighborhoods, connecting with residents across Kroo Bay, Kingtom, Ascension Town, and PZ to raise vital awareness on the harmful effects of illicit drugs.
Building a safer, healthier community starts with these conversations, and we are just getting started—our tour continues today and tomorrow! 🤝💙

*SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT 2026*

In commemoration of World Drug Day 2026, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Sierra Leone will embark on a four-day School and Community Engagement Campaign across Freetown from 15th–18th June 2026.

The engagement aims to raise awareness about the dangers of drug and substance abuse, educate young people especially school going pupils and community members on prevention strategies, and promote a positive lifestyle towards building safer, healthier, and drug-free communities.

This year's theme is *"World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges and Innovative Responses."*

We therefore call on all partners, community based organizations, MDAs, civil society organizations and the general public to join us in the fight against Drug and Substance Abuse through support, awareness raising and prevention programs.

Together, we can empower our youth, strengthen our communities, and create a brighter future for Sierra Leone.
