What Sierra Leone Needs: Building the Foundations for Our Future 🇸🇱

Infrastructure is the backbone of any nation’s progress it connects people, drives business, improves lives, and unlocks our true potential. As Sierra Leone moves forward, there are key areas we must focus on to build a stronger, more prosperous country for every citizen, no matter where they live.

Here is what our nation needs most:

Good Roads and Connectivity

We need a reliable network of roads, bridges, and highways that link cities, towns, and remote communities. Too many areas are still hard to reach, which makes it difficult for farmers to get their goods to market, stops children from getting to school easily, and makes access to healthcare a struggle. Better transport links will bring our people closer together and open up opportunities across the whole country.

Reliable Energy

Electricity is essential for homes, businesses, hospitals, and schools. Right now, access is still limited in many places, and supply is often inconsistent. We need to expand power generation including using our great potential for renewable energy like solar and water and improve distribution so that every home, small business, and public facility has the power it needs to grow and thrive.

Clean Water and Sanitation

Every Sierra Leonean deserves safe drinking water and proper sanitation. Many communities still walk long distances to get water, and lack of good sanitation affects health and well being, especially for children. Investing in water systems, treatment plants, and proper waste management will save lives, improve health outcomes, and help our people live with dignity.

Quality Public Facilities

We need well-built, well equipped schools and hospitals across the nation. These are places where our children learn and where we go when we are sick they deserve to be safe, accessible, and fit for purpose. We also need proper markets, public spaces, and storage facilities to support trade and help our local businesses succeed.

Digital Infrastructure

In today’s world, being connected is just as important as having good roads. We need better internet and communication networks that reach all parts of the country. This will help young people learn new skills, help businesses reach more customers, and make it easier for us to access information and services.

Building these things takes time, effort, and investment, but it is the only way to make sure Sierra Leone progresses for everyone. When we build strong foundations, we create jobs today and give our children a better tomorrow. This is our country, and building it better is a job for all of us government, private sector, and citizens working together.

Let’s talk about it in the comments below 👇

As of early 2026, Sierra Leone’s economy is in a period of stabilization and recovery, following a severe cost-of-living crisis in 2023–2024. While macro-indicators like inflation are improving significantly, the country continues to face high debt risks and a fragile fiscal environment.

1. Economic Growth and Transformation

• GDP Growth: The economy is growing at a steady pace, projected at 4.3% to 4.5% for 2025 and 2026. This growth is primarily driven by the mining sector (iron ore), a recovering services sector, and efforts to boost agricultural productivity.

• Structural Shift: A recent rebasing of the GDP revealed that the economy is larger than previously thought, with the services sector (46%) overtaking agriculture (34%) as the largest contributor to the economy.

2. Inflation and Monetary Policy

• Rapid Disinflation: After peaking at 55% in late 2023, inflation has seen a dramatic decline, reaching single digits (around 7%) by mid-2025. This was achieved through aggressive interest rate hikes by the Bank of Sierra Leone (BSL) and a more stable exchange rate.

• Leone Stability: The currency has stabilized against the US Dollar compared to the volatile fluctuations of 2023, though foreign exchange reserves remain thin (covering only about 1.5 months of imports).

3. Fiscal Challenges and Debt

• High Debt Distress: Sierra Leone remains at a high risk of debt distress. The government spends a significant portion of its revenue on debt servicing, leaving limited room for social spending.

• IMF Support: In late 2025, the IMF completed reviews under the Extended Credit Facility (ECF), allowing for nearly $80 million in disbursements. This support is tied to strict "fiscal discipline," meaning the government must cut spending and increase tax revenue.

• New Taxes: To boost revenue, the government implemented the 2024/2025 Finance Acts, which introduced or increased taxes on rice imports, cement, iron rods, and digital services. While this helps the national budget, it has kept the cost of essential goods high for the average citizen.

4. Key Risks and Social Impact

• Food Security: Despite the "Feed Salone" initiative, food security remains a major concern. The reintroduction of import duties on rice (5% in 2024, rising to 10% in 2025) has been controversial, as it puts pressure on the staple food of the population.

• Poverty Rates: While macro-stability is returning, approximately 32% of the population still lives below the extreme poverty line. The "cost-of-living" recovery is felt more in the data than in the pockets of ordinary citizens, who still face high prices for fuel and utilities.

In summary, the government has successfully steered the country away from hyperinflation and currency collapse, but the path forward relies heavily on maintaining IMF-backed reforms and successfully diversifying the economy beyond mining.

A significant milestone for the 'Feed Salone' initiative! Huge congratulations to Dr. Henry Musa Kpaka, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, and the AVDP team on the successful commissioning of the Tangabu community bridge. By restoring year-round access to these high-potential cocoa-producing communities, you are not only unlocking vital economic opportunities and market connectivity for local farmers but also delivering essential social dividends in education and rural development. This is a powerful testament to the impact of strategic infrastructure investment in transforming livelihoods across the Kailahun District.👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🙆🏾‍♂️

BREAKING NEWS: AFCON Title Shaken Up!

In a shocking turn of events, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Appeal Board has officially stripped Senegal of their Africa Cup of Nations title. Morocco has been crowned the new AFCON champions.

The decision follows a controversial ruling regarding Senegal's actions during the final, where the team walked off the pitch to protest a late penalty awarded to Morocco. Although the penalty was eventually missed and Senegal went on to win 1-0 in extra time, CAF has ruled that the walk-off protest violated tournament regulations.

What do you think about this decision? Is it fair to strip a title over a pitch protest, or should the result on the field stand?

Stop spending your life on a "free trial" basis.

Time is the only currency you can’t earn back, yet we often spend it like it’s infinite. Whether you’re letting others drain your energy or you’re distracting yourself from your own potential, wasting time is a debt that always comes due.

Think about the year as a whole. Every "just five more minutes" or "I'll do it tomorrow" eventually adds up to weeksand then months of lost opportunity. Respecting your time means respecting your life.

It’s time to stop wasting energy on:
People who only value you when they need something.
Distractions that keep you from your goals.
Self-doubt that freezes you in place while the clock keeps ticking.

Don’t let a whole year become just a collection of empty hours and "what ifs." Make this year count not by just being busy, but by being intentional.

The year is going to pass anyway. The only question is: what will you have to show for it when the clock runs out? 🕰️✨

The ongoing instability is doing more than just dominating the news cycle; it’s reshaping our economic reality. Here are the three major ways this is hitting home:

1. Skyrocketing Oil Prices
With Iran being a major producer and the Strait of Hormuz the world’s most vital oil artery at risk, we are seeing a massive spike in crude oil prices. When shipping lanes are threatened, global supply drops, and the cost of everything from filling your tank to heating your home goes up.

2. Economic Stagnation in the Region 🏗️
For the people of Iran, war means more than just physical danger; it means a crippled economy. We’re seeing deep GDP contractions, hyperinflation, and the destruction of critical infrastructure. This sets back years of development and makes basic necessities like food and medicine harder to afford.

3. The Global "Ripple Effect"
High energy costs act as a hidden tax on everyone. As oil prices rise, so does the cost of manufacturing and shipping. This fuels global inflation, slows down economic growth, and creates a cycle of uncertainty that affects stock markets and retirement funds worldwide.

In times like these, the global economy reminds us just how interconnected we all are. The path to economic stability starts with peace and de-escalation.
