Jowhar Field Report

Title: Rice production as substituted commodity

Rice is a staple meal in Somalia. 100% of the rice consumed is imported, with roughly 800 million USD spent on this item each year. For this reason, the Danwadaag group of companies, with the assistance of the United States African Development Foundation (USADF), chose to improve rice farming conditions in Jowhar and enhance rice production through effective intervention. This company wanted to ensure that local farmers benefit from rice production with available local markets and thereby enhance their livelihood conditions.

The SOCA team monitored Danwadaag Project kickoff activities in Jowhar District, the capital city of Hirshabelle State, Somalia. This company officially began its first grant activities, which were postponed due to the rainy season. Somalis have two famining seasons: ''Gu'' (February to May) and ''Dayr'' (September to December). Danwadaag company selected 50 rice farmers for the first phase of the project. Every farmer will receive rice farming input, including; land preparation, seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides. The targeted beneficiary will pay back 50% of the investment as per the project plan. During the monitoring, the Danwadaag group of companies accomplished two stages and will finish 80 percent of the projected rice cultivation processes by the early week of March 2024. SOCA monitors picked 30% of the targeted beneficiaries at random. The selected beneficiaries were interviewed. The assessment also included a site visit and the collection of evidence. The key informative interview was part of the assessment
