How to Read a Centrifugal Pump Performance Curve:

A pump performance curve is a graphical representation of how a centrifugal pump performs under different operating conditions. It helps engineers select the right pump, determine the operating point, estimate efficiency, calculate power requirements, and ensure reliable system operation.

🔹 Main Curves on a Pump Performance Chart

1️⃣ Head Curve (H vs Q)
• Shows the relationship between flow rate (Q) and developed head (H).
• As flow rate increases, the pump head decreases.
• Used to determine whether the pump can meet the required system head.

2️⃣ Efficiency Curve (η vs Q)
• Indicates how efficiently the pump converts mechanical energy into hydraulic energy.
• The highest point on this curve is called the Best Efficiency Point (BEP).
• Pumps should ideally operate near the BEP for maximum performance and reliability.

3️⃣ Power Curve (P vs Q)
• Shows the motor power required at different flow rates.
• Power generally increases as flow increases.
• Helps select the correct motor size.

🔹 Step-by-Step: How to Read a Pump Curve

1️⃣ Determine System Requirements
• Required Flow Rate (Q)
• Required Total Dynamic Head (TDH)

2️⃣ Locate Flow Rate
• Find the required flow rate on the X-axis.

3️⃣ Read Pump Head
• Move vertically upward until you intersect the Head Curve.
• Read the corresponding head value on the left Y-axis.

4️⃣ Read Efficiency
• From the same flow rate, locate the Efficiency Curve.
• Read efficiency (%) from the right Y-axis.

5️⃣ Read Power
• At the same flow rate, locate the Power Curve.
• Read the required motor power (kW).

6️⃣ Identify the Operating Point
• The intersection of the system curve and pump head curve represents the actual operating point.

🔹 Example

Required Flow Rate (Q) = 200 m³/h

From the Pump Curve:
• Head (H) ≈ 60 m
• Efficiency (η) ≈ 78%
• Power (P) ≈ 35 kW

Operating Point:
• Flow = 200 m³/h
• Head = 60 m
• Efficiency = 78%
• Power = 35 kW

⚙️ Important Terms

• Q = Flow Rate (m³/h)
• H = Total Head (m)
• η = Pump Efficiency (%)
• P = Power (kW)
• BEP = Best Efficiency Point
• NPSH = Net Positive Suction Head

✅ Best Practices
• Operate as close as possible to the BEP.
• Avoid extremely low or high flow operation.
• Ensure Available NPSH is greater than Required NPSH.
• Select a motor with sufficient power margin.
• Verify the pump meets the system head across the operating range.
• Monitor vibration, temperature, and efficiency during operation.
