Every “why?” is an invitation to think.

On Friday, the Early Childhood Department of the Department of Education brought K-2 teachers together for Growing Thinkers: STEM Through Literacy, and what a morning it was!

We read like scientists, coded a “robot” across a Twister mat, built tangram pictures from words alone, and launched paper balls with ruler levers. Not everything worked first time, and that was exactly the point. ✨

The big idea: young children already notice, wonder, predict, test and explain. A good book and the right question keep that thinking going. How far a child’s thinking goes often depends on what we say next.

Thank you to the Early Childhood Department and to every teacher who brought so much energy to the room. 💛

Practice is how we build skills. 💡

At Learn & Lead, we’ve always believed that you don’t learn to read, solve a problem or speak with confidence by hearing about it once. You learn by doing it, again and again.

That’s why we built the Practice Hub: a place for our students and clients to keep practising between sessions, and for anyone who can’t always be with us in person.

📚 Learning Support, Pre-K to Year 8
🔤 Adult Literacy
💬 English for Life and Work
⭐ Soft Skills for professionals
🍎 Training for teachers
🏡 Guides for parents

Made right here in the Turks and Caicos Islands, with games built around island life.

Monthly memberships start with a free 7-day trial, and Hub access is included for students enrolled with us.

Today I had the pleasure of facilitating ‘Own Your Words: Professional Communication for Educators’ with a fantastic group of teachers in South Caicos.

We worked on both sides of communication, how we speak and how we write, and explored the barriers that can get in the way of being heard by parents, colleagues and students.

Clear, confident, authentic communication is still one of our most powerful professional skills.

Thank you to every educator who took part so openly.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of facilitating Behavioural Strategies for the Classroom with a wonderful group of educators.

The heart of the session was four words: Prevent, Teach, Respond, Repair. So often our energy goes into how we respond in the moment. But the real change happens before and after, in how we set children up for success, teach the skills they’re missing, and repair the relationship when things go wrong.

Earlier this week I had the opportunity to facilitate STEM Starts at Home: Growing Thinkers Through Everyday Play for the Department of Education, and we reached our full capacity of 100 participants!

Thank you to the organizers and every parent who showed up to learn practical ways to notice the STEM already happening in their homes, and to keep it going.

Our children don’t need a science kit to become thinkers. They need space to wonder, and a grown-up who asks “How could we find out?”

I’ve shared my takeaways on the blog. The link is in my bio.

Last week we had the opportunity to work with the staff of Shinning Stars on the topic of Differentiation in the Inclusive Classroom.

Differentiation is a big idea, so we took it apart and put it back together in pieces small enough to use in the first weeks of term.

We explored what inclusion really asks of a classroom, the four domains of need, cognitive, emotional, behavioural and social, and the four things we can change: content, process, product and environment. From there, readiness, interest and learning profile, flexible grouping, accommodations and modifications, and how to tier one lesson three ways without writing three lessons.

Everyone left with at least one change they can make in their first week back with a new class. That is where it starts.

Thank you for the energy and the honest thinking in this room. Here is to a strong year Shinning Stars! ✨

Earlier this week we had the opportunity to work with the Ona Glinton Primary School staff on Emotional Intelligence for Educators.

This skill is key. Before you can read a child’s behaviour, you have to be able to read your own state. A teacher who has noticed their own frustration rising is in a far better position to notice everything else.

We explored the five elements of emotional intelligence, self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy and social skills, and what each one looks like in a real classroom, including areas like triggers, the four-step pause, repair, and reading the function of a behaviour rather than just the behaviour.

Thank you for all the deep work done during this workshop and I can’t wait to hear about this academic year’s success!
