Ukrainian Forces Face Intense Pressure in Southern Front Amid Troop Shortages
Ukrainian forces are facing escalating pressure in southern Ukraine as Russian troops intensify their advance in the Zaporizhzhia region, exploiting Ukrainian troop shortages and weaker defensive positions.
According to a Ukrainian officer with the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), the situation on the ground has become “intense,” with Russian units vastly outnumbering Ukrainian defenders. The officer, identified by the call sign Bankir, said Russian forces are pushing hard to seize more territory in an apparent effort to strengthen their position ahead of any potential negotiations.
Russian troops have advanced across open countryside in multiple areas of Zaporizhzhia in recent weeks, capturing hundreds of square kilometers. They are reportedly using small, mobile infantry groups to probe Ukrainian lines, seeking out the least defended routes to break through.
Heavy fighting has been concentrated around the frontline town of Huliaipole, located about 80 kilometers east of the regional capital Zaporizhzhia. Once home to tens of thousands of residents, the town has become a focal point of the renewed offensive.
At a meeting attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday, Russia’s regional commander, Col. Gen. Andrei Ivanaev, claimed that Huliaipole had fallen under Russian control. Ivanaev said Russian forces have taken more than 210 square kilometers of territory in the Zaporizhzhia and neighboring Dnipropetrovsk regions since early December, reinforcing Moscow’s claim that it will eventually occupy four eastern and southern Ukrainian regions.
However, Ukrainian and independent sources dispute Russia’s claim. The Ukrainian conflict monitoring group DeepState reported that Ukrainian forces are still holding positions in parts of Huliaipole, though it now considers the town a “grey zone,” with Russian forces possessing a significant manpower advantage.
