During the last decade Urmia Lake has been shrunk and its maximum depth has fallen from 12 to 6 meters. Experts bel
ieve that the lack of efficient water management and constructing 40 dams over the rivers following the drought that began in 1999 are the main reasons. According to experts, ecologists and Iranian officials, if the lake completely dries up it may result in an ecological calamity not only in Azerbaijani cities of Iran but also, in neighboring countries of Turkey, Azerbaijan, Iraq, and Armenia. Lake Urmia situated between East Azerbaijan and West Azerbaijan provinces in Iran. It is THE LARGEST lake in the Middle East, THE SECOND LARGEST salt water lake in the world, The biggest natural ARTEMIA habitats in the world. Registered under the convention on wetlands of international importance as waterfowl habitat (the Ramsar convention of the UN No. 14583 adopted in 1975)
