Arkistan

Arkistan We facilitate exchange of expertise related to the built environment, by way of lectures, workshops and excursions in İstanbul.

Arkistan is a joint initiative by Orhan Esen and Katharina Sucker. It is a complementary service to Urbanitiez. Both Arkistan and Urbanitiez are set up to support knowledge-exchange and collaboration between scholars, researchers and sector-professionals in the realm of the built environment of Istanbul. Lectures, participatory events, workshops as well as excursions and field trips are their most

typical formats. Arkistan offers consultancy and guidance to professionals in the metropolitan area. It concentrates on the existing building stock, and current developments in architecture, urban development and planning. With its hands on the pulse of Istanbuls rich culture and art sector Arkistan caters for pleasant experiences according to the lifestyle and interests of its guests. Joyful moments are an indistinguishable part of expanding networks and gaining new knowledge. Urbanitiez is designed to support civil society organizations and students. With an emphasis on contextual research it concentrates on what drives urban production, moving from the building to the built environment. Urbanitiez also provides frame and starting point for civil participation, or interventions through art and design. Itineraries and program concepts developed here focus more strongly on urbanism and the sociological aspects of the city.

The new airport of istanbul, allegedly the biggest one worldwide, has just (soft) opened. (It will take some time to fully function. completion of the entire construction program is envisaged for 2028) The problem in Istanbul is: too much, too fast and cheap constructing. In Berlin its exactly vice versa: Not enough is being constructed, too slow, and too much at luxury level. One system, two paths, very similar outcome. We'll have a chance to discuss that tomorrow evening on occasion of two films within the first part of the "Baustelle Bosporus" Program at ZKU.

Suburban dreaming in Göktürk --- A visit in preparation to the Istanbul-based workshop on Global Suburbanisms at Istanbul Kültür University.... Göktürk, the story of which began with the luxury residential project Kemer Country in 1990 is by now a highly densified district municipality of Istanbul. This Project by EAA called Arketip is an attempt to architecturally reorganize out- of- town living. Its architecture was a response to the critique on segregation and sprawl caused by single family house settlements (gated communities) build on the periphery of the city.
