The recent incident involving the MV Barima in Guyana highlights the critical importance of properly implementing the International Safety Management (ISM) Code. While the full facts and findings of any official investigation should be awaited before drawing definitive conclusions, effective ISM implementation is designed to identify and control operational risks before they lead to accidents.
A properly implemented Safety Management System (SMS) should ensure that hazards are identified, risk assessments are conducted, critical equipment is properly maintained, crew are adequately trained, emergency procedures are regularly practised, and clear lines of responsibility and communication are established between the vessel and shore management.
The ISM Code is not simply a document or a certificate—it must be a living safety management system actively followed by everyone involved in the operation. Proper implementation, effective internal audits, management oversight, and a strong safety culture can help identify unsafe conditions early and prevent incidents, protecting lives, vessels, cargo, and the marine environment.
