5 Lessons I’ve Been Learning as a Busy Mom and Role Model to Young Women and Girls

Firstly, I didn’t choose to be a role model. I just shared my story, started taking my purpose more seriously and then it happened organically. Here are a couple things I’ve been learning along the way.

1.Most people just want to be listened to. Whether they are 8 or 18, every young person needs a safe, non-judgmental ear. Someone who won’t diminish their struggles but will offer, “I get it.” Listening heals.

2.It took me 30+ years to figure out my own path, and I’m still learning. The same will be true for young people. While we want to shield them from every hardship, doing so robs them of their own story. Gently guide them, watch over them, but allow them the space to make mistakes—and be there when they rise to do better.

3.Value is something you learn over time. Many young people struggle with feeling worthy, but they need to understand they are more valuable than anything in this world. Empowering them to see their own value is key to helping them build the confidence to succeed.

4.Perfection is a myth. We tend to aim for perfection in everything we do, but I’ve learned that growth comes from imperfection. It’s through our flaws and failures that we truly evolve into the person we’re meant to be. Encourage young people to strive for growth, not perfection.

5.Lead by example. I’ve learned that showing up authentically, being vulnerable, and sharing my story helps others see that it’s okay to be imperfect and still powerful. The young women and girls in my life look to me not for perfection, but for realness—and that’s the best gift I can offer them.

Reflecting on Last year when my dear friend Lindsey Stone shared her journey with some unfortunately, incarcerated young women.

Lindsey having seen the other side of those walls herself brought a sense of ‘realness’ to the women in those chairs. That none of us behind that table could have.

I always say that sharing your story creates space for shame to be broken in someone else’s life, and for hope to be restored.

It’s the very foundation that my annual events “Labour of Love” is founded on.

Sharing your personal story, so that another woman can see that you made it , so that she can do it too!

This year we will be taking our annual women’s retreat to Tobago.

Last year we held two events. One at the San Salvador Estate in Gran Couva, and another one at the women’s prison.

This year we are hoping to reach women in Tobago to bring our stories of hope to them.

Thank you Perseverance Preparatory for having having me facilitate your ‘Etiquette Day’.

I found this to be a great initiative as a school to see the importance of teaching the children especially on Valentine’s Day that showing love, is also based on showing respect.

While we spoke a bit about the technical aspects of Etiquette such as dining etc, I left them with this main principle that I would like to share with you.

“Etiquette is like a secret code that helps us navigate through social situations with grace, kindness, and respect. When we practice consistent consideration of others, having good manners and etiquette becomes natural, because we want to make others comfortable in our presence.“ Akenna Kublal

Anton Chekhov, a Russian Physicist said that a civilized person, exudes good manners by simply respecting human beings as good individuals. tolerant, gentle, courteous and amenable.

They do not create scenes over a hammer or a mislaid eraser; they do not make you feel they are conferring a great benefit on you when they live with you, and they don’t make a scandal when they leave.

One of the things I’ve always taught in my etiquette workshops is that Good manners is simply just the ability to consider how your actions impact the way others feel, whether it be at the meal table or in life.

I’m currently working on putting together one more etiquette workshop before the Holiday season.
