In case you missed the session last week, here are some highlights from our presentation on “Trafficking in Persons: Confronting Challenges and Advancing Solutions”.
With Technology-facilitated trafficking:
○ Technology has created new low-cost and low risk opportunities for traffickers to exploit persons – no need to travel or leave the house
Resource shortages – human and financial
○ shortage of shelters, specialised psychosocial services, legal assistance and long-term reintegration programmes, shortage of services in the victim’s native language
○ Some victim care Services are difficult to access outside major urban centres and in the source country, especially in cross-border cases
○ Do service providers have sufficient knowledge and understanding to respond appropriately to victims who are being controlled by financial, emotional, substance dependency, and by spiritual witchcraft?
○ Can response agencies help victims overcome their FEAR of deportation, reprisals, job loss, loss of earnings, safety of relatives, corrupt officials
What about the STIGMA and DISTRUST that often prevent victims from reporting exploitation and from cooperating with law enforcement?
