Celebrating Impact Amidst Unexpected Challenges

The journey of our project "Supporting Resilience for Parents and Caregivers of Children Diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in Trinidad and Tobago" has been nothing short of inspiring. Despite the difficult news of its early termination due to cuts in foreign aid, we have so much to be proud of.

Through this project, we empowered families, strengthened support systems, and made tangible strides toward greater inclusivity for children with autism.

While this chapter may be closing, the lessons learned highlighted below, and the resilience of the families we worked with remind us why this work matters. The fight for better policies, increased access, and stronger support networks is far from over.

To my incredible colleagues, partners, and all the caregivers who shared their journeys with usโ€”thank you! Your voices and experiences fuel the momentum for change.

Though this project ends, our commitment to advocacy and action continues. Letโ€™s keep pushing forward together.

Huge thanks to Tracy's Caring Hands Daycare and Preparatory School for partnering with us on this project.

It's so important for families of children with ASD to have professional support not only in delivering tailored services, but also going the extra mile in ensuring that those families have access to as many additional resources as needed.

We were delighted to partner with Survival Scholars and The Jones Research Centre Ltd. as part of their project to incorporate puppetry in our curriculum. The children as well as their parents were all excited to create their own puppets.

What an incredible weekend of creativity and connection!

On Saturday, January 18th, and Sunday, January 19th, The Jones Research Centre joined forces with the Survival Scholars Society to host engaging puppet-making sessions for families participating in the Supporting Resilience for Parents/Caregivers of Children Diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) project in Trinidad and Tobago.

These handmade puppets will play a vital role in supporting children with ASD in speech and occupational therapy, promoting both verbal and nonverbal communication. They will also help children express themselves, regulate emotions, manage daily tasks, and reduce the frequency of meltdowns.

During the sessions, families explored the therapeutic benefits of puppets, designed their own unique sock puppets, and enjoyed a lively puppet dance performance. We're thrilled to see these vibrant creations come to life in therapy sessions over the next six months!

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who made this weekend so special. Together, weโ€™re building tools for resilience and expression!

This project is funded by the U.S. Embassy, Port of Spain and implemented by The Jones Research Centre.
