rse soon after the launch of Coco Velvet she won Miss Universe; this brought a lot of attention to the agency along with Paul Robert Pryce's win on the Oprah Winfrey show. Alicia Hendrie looked after administrative affairs. Coco Velvet revolutionised the local commercial modeling industry back in the nineties as models rates shot up from $500.00 for an advertisement to over $10 000.00. Bookings in the first year of operation amounted to
$400 000.00

Early fashion productions include Nestle Svelty Fashion File, Trinidad & Tobago Fashion Model Awards, Trinidad & Tobago Top Model, Melange - BWIA Caribbean Fashion Canvas and Nescafe Women with Style. A lookback at yesterdays fashion showcase at the picturesque Leilani Estate in Maracas St Joseph. Directing the fashion showcase allowed me to see work from the next generation of T&T fashion and accessories designers, especially the alumni collection from graduates of the University of Trinidad & Tobago's fashion academy The CAFD FashionTT Global Trinidad and Tobago and I dare say the designers certainly delivered way beyond my expectations. The models also deserve special mention as they gave their time and services without remuneration. I want to publicly thank them for their generousity, runway expertise and professionalism. Where it all began...48 years ago in January 1978 my work in the fashion industry started as a male model.

I was sixteen years old, attending Woodbrook Secondary School on French St when I read in the newspapers that Anne Mc Shine Sharma was opening a finishing school and training academy for new models on Henry Street in Port of Spain. My mother was totally against my plan so I never got her permission to enroll but I did anyway, attending classes in my school uniform three times a week.

Once I graduated I applied to Finale Fashions which was located close to my school on Maraval Road to work as a professional model. After several years the owner Jasareh closed the model agency to return to Barbados so I joined House of Jacqui (1986 - 1990) then Mannequins Image Management (1991 - 1997)

During my time with Mannequins owner Richard Young appointed me Rehearsal Director & Fashion Music Coordinator which allowed me to fine tune my skills in fashion coordination and directing. On October 1st 1997 I took the entrepreneural plunge and opened Coco Velvet International Fashion & Model Management at 54 Gallus Street Woodbrook with two divisions, one for model management with a mission to discover, develop and export models from the Caribbean to the world's fashion capitals.

The other division was to be focused on providing essential fashion management services to designers, fashion producers, retailers as well as regional governments interested in developing their fashion, textiles or garment manufacturing sectors. With this mission in mind I prepared the Trinidad & Tobago Fashion Industry Development Proposal and presented it to the late Kenneth Valley - Minister of Trade & Industry at his Riverside Plaza office in 2000 seeking government approval for our fashion industry to be designated an industrial sector for national development. After nine years of advocacy and lobbying Cabinet of Trinidad & Tobago finally declared fashion T&Ts 8th non-energy industrial sector in December 2010 and commissioned the Fashion Industry Development Committee (FIDC) under the auspices of Ministry of Trade, Investment & Tourism
