It’s Barbie’s world, and we’re all just living in it!
Mattel’s Barbie has long been protected with intellectual property. The iconic Barbie feet are on full display in the patent for the doll’s construction granted to inventor J.W. Ryan in 1961. Other aspects of the original design – like Barbie’s ability to stand upright – have changed.
Barbie's trademark was registered in 1959, protecting the usage of the unmistakable name in reference to dolls. The brand has also registered past and present trademarks for the iterations and adventures of Barbie that followed, as well as playsets, toy vehicles, sleepwear, animated webisodes, online games, and credit cards.
Oh, and Ken, of course.
