_Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه reports that_

_Sayyiduna Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم said something to the effect:_

“Many are the ones who fast,

attaining nothing by such fasting except for hunger,

and many are the ones performing salaah by night attaining nothing by it,

except for the discomfort of staying awake at night.”
*(ابن ماجة)*

With regards to the above hadeeth, ulama have mentioned three interpretations:

1) The person after having fasted the entire day, opened his fast with haraam food.

2) The person fasted and didn't protect his tongue and spoke ill and slandered people.

3) The person fasted and didn't abstain from sin.
