How to construct a poultry house:

Commercial chicken farming requires a high-level of expertise, understanding and commitment to be successful.

Whilst it’s important to emphasize the need for excellent flock management at all times, something that comes with experience and aptitude, adopting the correct housing techniques and equipment will set a firm foundation for success of your poultry venture.

The following is a guiding checklist for poultry house construction:

"A poultry house should provide the birds with a comfortable environment and protect them from the extremities of the prevailing weather (rain, wind and sunshine).

"It should have adequate space for the flock to be kept in the house. The ideal stocking density is:

1. Layers: one square metre for 6 birds.

2. Broilers: One square metre for 11 birds.

"It should be open-sided to allow natural ventilation with an east-west orientation to minimise the amount of sunlight entering the house directly. Its not good for sun rays to strike directly into the poultry house.

"It should be rectangular in shape and have a wall not higher than three feet on the longer side. The widith should be at least 7-9 metres, but for the length you are only limited by your land. Avoid building poultry houses in a square form.

"The wall can be made from stones, iron sheets, timber, silver boards or bricks

"The rest of the side of the wall should have a chicken wire mesh. The wire mesh on the sides of the house should be of a small gauge to prevent entry of wild birds, dogs and rodents. This normal chicken mesh is not long lasting.....within a few months it rusts and gets off the house. its better to use a plastic quoted mesh.

"The roof of the house should have a reflecting surface and pitched with overlaps to ensure that the house is comfortable and well ventilated. There should be enough gap between the birds and the roof to avoid heat stress. The pin of the house should be 8 metres from the ground, and the sides shoul

✍ *EARN MILLIONS FROM GROWING PASSION FRUITS* 🍈
👌 *Background*
Passion fruits are one of the most expensive and not common fruits on market. Its highly nutritious and mainly produced for juice processing.
Passion fruits are heavy feeders and sensitive to water logging therefore require deep, well drained fertile soils.
It grows best at PH 5.5-7. Needs more of Nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium plus organic matter. (Its prudent that you test the soil to be sure about the availability of these nutrients and know what to add)
*Varieties*
We have the local Purple, a hybrid Upf 12 ,sweet yellow and big purple varieties
You must know your market before choosing the variety to grow.

👉 *ESTABLISHMENT*
▪️ Land preparation
Passion fruits need to be planted in an open place direct sunlight
Remove all trees and bushes
Do some ploughing to remove the unwanted vegetation and shrubs
▪️ Make the holes: Holes should be 2ft wide and 2ft deep.
After making the holes, mix the top soil with half a basin of decomposed manure and fill back the hole.
Make the holes atleast 2weeks prior to planting.
▪️ Spacing: This should be 7*7ft at least for the purple variety.
Meaning we shall make *734* holes in one Acre.
▪️ *Planting*
You can choose to buy ready seedlings at 1500Ushs each or make your own nursery bed.
At planting, get your seedlings, apply some 50gms of DAP in the hole then put your seedling and cover well.
Transplant during cool hours of the day to minimize transpiration shock.

POULTRY REARING
Poultry contributes to improved human nutrition and food security by being a
leading source of high quality protein in form of eggs and meat. It acts as a key
supplement to revenue from crops and other livestock enterprises, thus avoiding
over dependency on traditional commodities with inconsistent prices. It has a high
potential to generate foreign exchange earnings through export of poultry products
to neighboring countries. Poultry is highly prized in many social-cultural functions
such as dowry and festivities. The poultry industry in Uganda is relatively new. Its
major problem is therefore associated with its further expansion, though care
must be taken to avoid overproduction. The industry is characterized by widely
diverse methods of production which include the following: village flocks, smallscale commercial flocks and large-scale commercial farms. Constraints in poultry
production include: production related constraints (inadequate access to improved
breed, access and affordability of feed, disease control); lack of knowledge and skills,
inadequate capital at all levels and marketing.
