Fun Fact Friday!

Did you know that coturnix quail have a high core body temperature of 105.8°F to 107°F!! While they are incredibly cold hardy and can tolerate temperatures as low as -20°F if kept dry and wind free, they have low heat tolerance. They rely heavily on shade, good ventilation, and water to prevent heatstroke in the summer. So like all birds, coturnix quail do not have sweat glands and lack the ability to sweat. To regulate their body temperature they will pant and breath rapidly with their mouths open, and fluff their feathers to allow air to reach their skin. Here at the farm we like to rotate frozen water bottles throughout the aviary on hot days. The quail like to lay up against the bottles or stand on them to cool off. We also use shallow pans of cold water poured over clay bricks that they also stand on to cool off. We provide plenty of shade throughout the aviary which not only helps with temperature but also provides them with hiding spots which helps them feel secure and protected.

Just wanted to share a little bit of information about myself....My name is Mason and I'm 15 years old and a proud member of the Byng FFA. My journey with Coturnix quail began in 8th grade when I started with just two birds. Before long, I added eight more, giving me a total of ten and laying the foundation for my own farm.

Today, I breed and raise Coturnix quail for both egg and meat production as part of my Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE). What started as a small project has grown into a passion, and I've come to appreciate everything about this amazing breed. Coturnix quail are hardy, productive, and perfectly suited for small backyard homesteads, making them an excellent choice for anyone interested in sustainable food production.

I'm thankful for the opportunities agriculture and the FFA have given me, and I'm excited to continue learning, growing, and sharing my love for Coturnix quail with others.

Fun fact Friday.....Did you know?

Every Coturnix quail hen lays a highly specific and consistent egg pattern that acts as an individual "fingerprint." By observing these distinct markings, breeders can easily identify which hen laid which egg!!

Fun fact Friday....Did you know that Coturnix quail, otherwise known as Japanese Quail originated in Asia!! The only quail native to Oklahoma are Bobwhite quail which can still be hunted out in western Oklahoma. Populations have declined in Oklahoma which most people think are because of predators....Sadly that is not true, Bobwhite quail need food and certain native plant and shrubs to survive....People now days use artificial grasses which they can not survive in and use insecticide sprays which kill their food sources. There is a local chapter called the Kofi Quail Forever Chapter in Pontotoc County so go follow their page and get involved to found out what you can do to bring the Bobwhite quail back to our area!!!

Fun fact Friday!!!

If you’ve ever heard a Coturnix male crow, you know it’s unmistakable. Their iconic “koo-tur-nix” call is actually how they earned their scientific name. While the boys can be chatty during breeding season, overall Coturnix are quieter than chickens—great news for backyard and city keepers.
