šŸ„¶ Itā€™s going to be a chilly morning, but weā€™ll be braving the cold at the Ada Farmerā€™s Market starting at 8:00 AM tomorrow! Stop by The Dusty Feather Quail Farm table to pick up some fresh quail eggs and, while youā€™re there, help us make a difference in someoneā€™s life this winter. šŸ¦šŸ„š

šŸ§¦ Weā€™re collecting SOCKS for those in need! šŸ§¦

Think about itā€¦ weā€™ll only be out in the cold for a short period of time tomorrow morning. We can bundle up, head home, and warm up. But for someone experiencing homelessness, the cold isnā€™t just a few uncomfortable hours at the farmerā€™s market. It can mean spending the entire winter outdoors, day after day, with nowhere warm to go.

ā¤ļø A simple pair of warm socks may seem like a small thing to us, but to someone facing a long, cold winter, it could make a world of difference.

If you have a new pair of socks to spare, please bring them by our table tomorrow morning! Every pair is a little reminder that someone cares. šŸ§¦ā¤ļø

**Fun Fact Friday**

Let's talk about quail egg scissors today. When people buy quail eggs they think they are cute and tiny, and just a smaller version of a chicken egg. Even though you can eat them in all the same ways you can eat a chicken egg....However, cracking them open is quite different!! Quail egg shells are much thinner than a chicken egg but the inner membrane is much tougher. You can't just crack a quail egg because the shell will break into several tiny pieces and the membrane will stay completely intact. I recommend using quail egg scissors to simply cut the rounded end of the egg and pour it out like a cup. I promise you that it will make your life a whole lot easier!! I buy the scissors in bulk so that you don't have too, and I sell the scissors for $3.00 each.

**Fun Fact Friday**

Let's talk about dust bathes!! One of my favorite things is to watch a.quail swirl around and kick sand and dirt all over their bodies. I was fascinated by it the first time I saw it happen. This is actually how I came up with the name The Dusty Feather Quail Farm. ā¤ļø
Coturnix quail need regular dust baths to clean their feathers, absorb excess oils, and suffocate external parasites like mites and lice. They do not use water baths like ducks.
Dust bathing is completely natural and hardwired. Even quail that have never seen a dust bath will start using it immediately.
Quail love to crowd into a bath together, wiggling, kicking up sand, and bathing as a group to bond and reduce social stress.
You can mix in a small amount of food-grade diatomaceous earth or a quarter to half a cup of fireplace wood ash in with sand or dirt to help combat pests, though these should be used sparingly to protect their lungs.
Keep the bath dry and clean. Sift out feathers and droppings regularly, and replace the sand when it gets dirty or moist.

Yesterday officially started "SOCKTOBER" and I will be collecting new socks for individuals and families in need ....Did you know that socks are the most essential item, yet the least donated!!! I will have a donation box at the Ada Farmer's Market every Saturday when I'm there selling my quail eggs (weather permitting of course) So if you feel it in your heart to donate, we need socks of all sizes...Thank you!!

Coturnix quail come in 2 basic sizes, Jumbo and Standard.

Jumbo Coturnix quail weigh more than standard Coturnix and are bred primarily for meat. They lay fewer eggs approximately 280-300 / year, but their eggs are generally larger.

Standard Coturnix quail weigh less, lay more eggs 300+ per year, and come in a wider variety of feather patterns and colors.

The term Jumbo refers to the weight of the adult bird, not the size of the eggs. With both sizes, hens are usually bigger than the roosters.

So I realized I forgot my Fun fact Friday, so lets talk about Safety on Saturday!!! Someone once told me that if you get quail it will bring out the predators and man that is definitely the truth!! We have had run ins with fox, snakes, raccoons, and mice!! I have learned alot over the last year regarding security when it comes to protecting my quail.
To predator-proof a quail cage or aviary in Oklahoma, you must use 1/4-inch or 1/2-inch galvanized hardware cloth instead of chicken wire, as Oklahoma's diverse predators (including raccoons, snakes, copperheads, rats, owls, hawks, and bobcats) can easily slip through or tear standard poultry netting.
Hardware and Structural Must-Haves1/4" or 1/2" Hardware Cloth (19-gauge or thicker): Cover all walls, floors, and tops. Chicken wire only keeps large animals out; mice, rats, and snakes can crawl right through it to kill quail or eat eggs.
Apron or Underground Dig Barrier: Bury your hardware cloth at least 12 inches deep, or construct an outward-extending "dig skirt" (apron) of wire mesh extending 12 to 24 inches flat on the ground and pinned down with landscape staples. Oklahoma has aggressive diggers like armadillos, coyotes, and foxes.
Solid Lower Wall Buffer: Install a 12-inch solid wood or metal strip around the bottom perimeter of the cage. Quail tend to hunker down against the sides when startled, and predators like raccoons can reach through wire to scalp or grab feet and legs if there is no solid kick-plate.
Heavy-Duty Spring Latches or Padlocks: Raccoons and clever corvids have hands and can open simple sliding latches or hooks. Use carabiners or spring-loaded double-action locks on all doors.

**Fun Fact Friday**

Let's talk about processing Coturnix quail.
Processing quail for consumption is NEVER a fun part of raising quail, BUT it is a necessary part of responsible farming when raising birds for meat. I don't take processing lightly. These birds have been cared for, and I believe they deserve respect from the day they hatch to the day they provide nourishment for a family. They reach processing size much faster than other poultry breeds. The ideal age for processing is 8 weeks for tender meat. Just a few things that I have learned through this quail farming business is that you learn where food comes from, you learn to appreciate the animals that provide it, and not everyday is all sunshine and cute little birds!!
