USDA announced an increase to Supplemental Disaster Relief Program (SDRP) payments and extended the application deadline to August 12, 2026, giving farmers more time to access assistance for losses in 2023 and 2024.

Initial SDRP payments were factored at 35%, but after further analysis, USDA is increasing the payment factor to 70%, meaning producers with approved applications will receive an additional 35% of their calculated SDRP payment. Future SDRP payments will also be made using a 70% payment factor.

With temperatures climbing back above freezing, we can begin to make a few assumptions on the status of the wheat crop. Weather stations collect temperature at an 8’ above ground level reading. While those temps were below 24 degrees for multiple hours, the 3-6” above ground height temperature is much more critical. Canopy density and ground temperature aid in supporting higher temperatures but the risk of falling below 24 degrees was very possible.

Below is a guide to aid in detailing the severity of freeze injury.

October planted wheat had the main tiller and most secondary tillers with one visible joint.

November wheat is delayed with only the main stem with one visible jointed node. Injury potential is lower on these fields but still very possible.

Don’t rush to make judgements on wheat just yet. Forecasted temps we should be able to make the call by the weekend. Leaf damage is already visible this morning. Damage does not guarantee head injury. However, If leaf damage does extend below the jointed nodes or growing point, chances of head injury significantly increase.

Secondary tillers need time to redevelop in order for a yield assessment to be made.

Just when we thought we were done!

In the past week, sorghum ergot has been detected in several locations in Kansas, primarily in forage sorghum fields, but also in grain sorghum.  This is a relatively rare event, with notable prior occurrences in 1997 and 2017. Sorghum ergot in the U.S. is caused by the fungus Claviceps africana. C...
