PRESS RELEASE
Now Is The Time To Talk And Take Action
WASHINGTON, May 24, 2022 – A parent-led survey looking at school safety in Alexandria, Virginia was conducted earlier this month in response to an increase in violence. The Community Views of Safety in the Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) survey found that more than 83 percent of community members are very or somewhat concerned about school safety, and more than 61 percent believe that children feel unsafe in ACPS schools.
Today, the Alexandria community members concerns became a reality when a high school student was stabbed to death during a brawl, and in Uvalde, Texas, 19 children were killed in a shooting at Robb Elementary School.
School safety is a critical issue that is often overlooked. According to educational experts, the most critical challenge for school leaders is ensuring that children have a safe learning environment.
"We can’t expect high achievement in our nation’s schools unless all students feel safe and secure," said Rudy Crew, former Chancellor of New York City Public Schools and former Superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools. “Violence is out-of-hand nationwide. Now is the time to talk and take action.”
“The alarm has been sounded, and unfortunately two communities paid the price with the loss of its precious children,” said M. René Islas, CEO of Crescere Strategies LLC, and a parent of four ACPS students. “Community members are outraged, and they are looking for answers. We need real leadership from elected officials and school leaders. We must listen to the scared voices of our children and take real steps to protect them.”
The Community Views of Safety in the Alexandria City Public Schools survey findings are a call to action for the Superintendent and School Board to engage the broader community to address safety concerns. More than 150 individual members of the Alexandria community indicated that they are interested in developing a plan to increase safety in ACPS.
About the Alexandria Community Parent-Led Survey
From the period between May 3 - 18, 2022, nearly 200 surveys were completed. Over 82 percent of the participants were parents of children enrolled in ACPS. The purpose of the survey was to gauge the level of concern about mounting violence in schools and initiate the development of a community led plan to increase safety.
