“Leyendecker was my god.” — Norman Rockwell

Before Norman Rockwell, there was J.C. Leyendecker (1874–1951), the celebrated illustrator whose distinctive style helped define American illustration and profoundly influenced Rockwell himself.

Already an established star of The Saturday Evening Post when Rockwell began illustrating for the publication, Leyendecker created 322 covers over his career, the exact same number as Rockwell. His iconic Arrow Collar Man advertisements and memorable holiday illustrations, including depictions of Santa Claus, helped shape the visual culture of early 20th-century America.

In his autobiography, Rockwell recalled admiring Leyendecker so much that he would secretly follow him through the streets of New Rochelle, just to be near him.

We are excited to offer six works by J.C. Leyendecker in our 20th & 21st Century Fine Art Auction, including an Arrow Collar Man advertisement (Lot 1027) and a Santa Claus illustration (Lot 1022).
