This custom silk scarf, designed for the debut of Bunny Mellon’s daughter Eliza Lloyd on June 16, 1961, is a rare artifact of Bunny and Cristóbal Balenciaga’s friendship. It features a repeating script motif in cream against a deep navy ground—a perfect example of Bunny’s “nothing should be noticed” mantra, where true luxury is found in personal meaning rather than flash. Balenciaga even famously designed her gardening clothes, proving that for Bunny, couture was a way of life, not just an outfit.

Much of Mellon’s personal wardrobe now forms the heart of the Mellon Collection at the Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum in Spain. When Cristóbal retired in 1968, he even personally entrusted her care to his protégé, Hubert de Givenchy, ensuring her wardrobe would always remain in master hands.

American, 1867-1925
“Frosty Morning”

This work was done during Rose’s last of many trips to Giverny, in the Spring, sometime between 1908 and 1912, depicting pollarded trees overhanging the river Ept in Giverny. It is very similar in style to Guy Rose’s “River Epte, Giverny.”
