Taking advantage of the long Thanksgiving weekend here in the US, I had a chance to spend more time on the low-cost (even lower cost than anticipated since the car I used to collect data was my son’s 😉 ) route optimization project.

While there are several takeaways from the project, the most striking (to me) is how readily available today’s technology is, even for small organizations, and the possibilities it enables. It appears that the days when innovation through the application of the latest technologies was accessible only to companies with deep pockets are long gone.

The carried-out project and its outcome offer the most significant payback for firms that run the same routes on a predetermined schedule. (There are many more algorithms available to analyze the resultant graph structure further. Also, costing a few dollars, the tested sensor, besides the GPS-related functions, can also measure and report on acceleration, orientation, and angular velocity, strength and direction of magnetic fields, barometric pressure, and altitude!)

Happy November,
Do you make recurring deliveries/pickups over the same routes? Are you interested in applying edge (in-vehicle) computing equipped with AI for the interpretation and anticipation of upcoming good or bad delivery/pickup situations? If so, please read up.

The first weekend in November felt like going back in time … about 30 years back, when straight out of Queen’s University (Canada - yes, the same time and place when Elon Musk was there) and as my first job after graduate school, I was sent to the UK to program machinery on a factory floor. (Lots of autonomously moving machinery all around. Looked unbelievably complex at first sight.)

This weekend, I brought AI to the edge of computing, a device (about $100) that handles local, small language models and communicates with the driver/corporate office in English. The practical solution I worked on was intended for garbage collection trucks, school buses, communication buses, or any other moving equipment that follows the same routes at a predefined frequency. With the AI onboard (and the data uploaded to the primary storage at the end of the day for organization-wide sense-making using LLM) and with various sensors attached (GPS, temp, weight, camera, etc.), the drivers/central office can receive information like:

“Bin 24 on Oak St. has exceeded average fill rate by 35% this week – recommend adjusting schedule/container size.”

“Traffic congestion caused delay on Main St – suggest alternate route for next cycle.”

“Truck #5 completed 89% of route. Overfilled bin detected at stop #12. Fuel efficiency down 10%.”

"Warning: Temperature in compactor chamber rising. Possible combustion risk.”

…whose kid behaves the worse on the school bus, and what the proposed action steps are. 😉

Analysis of the City of San Jose (CA) Authorized C&D Haulers’ contracts – practical use case for conversational AI (and GraphRAG), among other things.

Rainy days always present themselves as an opportunity for an AI project. This time, I gave a shot at a tutorial created by the great Neo4j team (Alison, Zach, Damaso – thank you for your excellent work Neo4j!) that extracts text from PDF documents, splits the text into chunks, assigns corresponding embeddings, passes it to the LLM, and builds a Neo4j property graph. (Oversimplifying a bit, sorry.)
As a result, English language-based or Cypher-based queries can be posed about various aspects of the resultant graph, including complex questions related to multiple interconnected aspects of the contract, knowledge not available in the traditional, non-graph-based RAG.
In this project, I used publicly available data from the City of San Jose, CA (Authorized Construction & Demolition Haulers | City of San José) – to save on the OpenAI costs, I only used the smallest ten contracts for analysis:
