You all had a chance to meet me via my last post. It’s time for you all to meet my menagerie of “employees” and the real reason I cannot offer boarding at this time. I have dreams of expanding to a operating a boarding facility soon. Until then, meet the team and their titles!

✨ Meet the Owner ✨

It's been a while since I've introduced myself, and since there are so many new faces here, I thought it was time to share a little about the person caring for your pets, plants, and home.

Hi! I'm Lane, the owner of Hearth and Hound.

I've been an animal enthusiast for as long as I can remember. My first job was at a local family-owned pet store, where I got my first taste of working with both animals and the people who love them. It was there that I learned the importance of customer service, attention to detail, and quality animal care. It also sparked the very first version of my pet-sitting business—though I've certainly grown a lot since those teenage years.

I graduated from Alma College with a degree in Biology and originally planned to become a veterinarian. Instead, my path led me into zookeeping. I completed an internship at Potter Park Zoo and later joined the team as a part-time keeper. During my time there, I cared for everything from mealworm colonies to Black Rhinos. When I say I've worked with all kinds of animals, I truly mean it.

My animal care journey continued at a local shelter, where I used the training techniques I'd learned at the zoo to help dogs develop skills that made their transition into homes smoother and more successful. I especially connected with the shy, sensitive dogs who needed a little extra patience and understanding. That passion eventually led me to adopt our CEO, Minnie.

From there, I had the opportunity to work alongside an incredible dog trainer in Lansing, where I gained a deeper understanding of canine body language and behavior modification. Working with what I lovingly call the "sensitive soybean" dogs taught me that understanding a dog's emotions goes far beyond what I previously thought.

Along the way, I also spent years working in the restaurant industry. From age 19 until last summer, I worked nearly every position imaginable and eventually moved into management. While the experience taught me leadership, organization, communication, and problem-solving, it also helped me realize that my true passion had always been animal care.

So, what do you do when you've climbed near the top of one industry and realize your heart belongs somewhere else?

You quit the salaried job, benefits, and 401(k) and bet on yourself.

That's how Hearth and Hound was born.

Today, I combine years of professional animal care experience, behavior knowledge, customer service, and home care expertise to provide the kind of pet sitting service I always wished existed. I understand that not every pet can be boarded, and some require a level of experience beyond what a well-meaning neighbor can provide.

My goal is simple: open communication, exceptional care, and the peace of mind that comes from knowing your pets and home are in capable hands.

Thank you to everyone who has trusted me with your furry, feathered, scaled, and plant family members. Your support means more than you know.

I am happy to answer any questions to see if I may be the right fit for your household. You can reach me via Messenger or by email at [email protected]

With warmer days ahead, make sure your dogs are staying safe in the heat! Every breed and every dog is different, so knowing your pet’s needs, limits, and warning signs is incredibly important.

Despite looking like a toasted marshmallow, Coda has yet to have his first s’more of the season. Same Coda, same.

We would like to change that for you all. Pack up the camper, grab the graham crackers, and leave the pets with me! I still have availability for the summer.

P.S. we here at Hearth and Hound do not condone the feeding of s’mores to dogs. Mainly because they are terrible at roasting marshmallows, oh and then there is the chocolate.

Hearth and Hound would like to wish all the mothers of every version a Happy Mother’s Day! We have a little tradition in our own home to celebrate the day. Despite how small of a gesture it may be and from an unlikely suspect, the love behind it is felt.

Without fail, my cat brings me a toy during the night before Mother’s Day. I believe it’s her version of breakfast in bed. I’m just happy it isn’t a real mouse again.

Nicer days are finally here and so is garden season! Even on vacation, weeds don’t take a break. Trust me, I learned that the hard way. Book our garden & flower care while you’re away and come home to healthy, happy beds.
