One apple tree can tell you a lot about the bucks using your property. 🍎

Secluded apple trees are a limited food source in a lot of places. When there aren’t a ton of apple trees available, they can be one of the best spots to have a camera.

Someway, somehow, big bucks seem to make an appearance on these trees—and NOW is the time to have your cameras on them.

If a specific buck is showing up frequently on your apple tree, that’s a pretty good indication you may be in his core home range.

These trees also tend to pick up more outlier bucks—bucks you haven’t been seeing anywhere else. That can be a really good indication that you might be in the game later in the season, especially once the rut starts.

Apparently this guy didn’t appreciate being part of our trail camera survey. 😂

This naughty rascal was up to all kinds of trouble. Not only was he showing off his moves on two feet, he decided to swat my camera around so I wouldn’t get any more pictures of him, but I caught him red handed. Luckily, no damage!

But there’s actually a reason this camera was here.

Our favorite way to inventory bucks using a property is a trail camera strategy I rarely hear anyone talk about. This time of year, it can even pick up bucks that don’t necessarily call your property their core area—and it makes it surprisingly easy to see which bucks are frequenting a specific property.

Great food by accident?

Back in April I started converting a section of cool season lawn over to native grass and wildflowers. Part of that process is a chemical strategy I’ve refined to improve establishment.

I no-tilled the natives into ground that had been treated with a chemical called Oust. There’s some people who think the stuff doesn’t let anything grow. I’ve been using it a long time so I know better.

One of the plants that made it through. A forage collard, that had no business surviving that treatment? It didn’t just survive — it thrived with 0 fertilizer, lime or seed treatments.
Over 3 feet tall, like a bush 3’ around.

Last couple days the deer found it. They’re hammering it right now, and honestly I’m a little worried there will be plenty left for the season.

This is why I pay attention to everything growing on my ground, even the stuff I didn’t mean to plant. You try something new, keep your eyes open, and every once in a while the land teaches you something you weren’t looking for.

You Probably Don't Know The Seed I'm Holding-

But I'd bet you planted it. It's a Daikon or Tillage Radish

Some think planting radish in a summer soil-building mix might be crazy, but in my summer fertilizer building plots mixes, I add a very light rate. In late May, this radish was planted with buckwheat, sunflowers, oats, and a bunch of other stuff. This plot wasn't intended to necessarily feed deer, it was planted as part of a soil building system to feed the soil 1st, so the soil can feed deer in the future.

Another perk — I didn't have to worry about adding radish seed to my fall plot, because I grew it during the summer.

Food plotters aren't farmers, we can choose to plant specific plants that can make growing future crops easier and dramatically cut down costs.

Never Pay For Goldenrod!
It's in full bloom right now, and it's about as common as it gets in the Upper Midwest — it's one of the most abundant, aggressive native forbs in Wisconsin. It shows up without help in old fields, fence rows, ditches, CRP ground, you name it.

A lot of it is considered "w**dy" natives because it spreads so easily by its roots and seed.

The awesome thing for land managers is deer love it. We've documented deer ripping chunks of it off to eat it and big bucks daytime bedding in it.

Native seed pricing is largely driven by how hard a plant is to collect, clean, and germinate. Goldenrod seed is cheap and easy to produce because the plant is so prolific — so if a mix is charging you a premium price and marketing it as "diversity", you're basically paying wildflower-seed prices for something many consider a "w**d".
