This past weekend, we said, goodbye to our Olive, the head cheerleader of our family, the faithful companion to her people and her fellow pets. She was our gremlin of goodness, fearless, and faithful, and bursting with love until her very last breath.

Her body ultimately failed her, but her spirit and energy never flagged. Even while her spinal cord deteriorated and her mobility became difficult, she was always game for a walk in the stroller, managed to dole out hilarious greetings to anyone who crossed our threshold and was the consummate shadow to her humans’ every activity– under foot, nosy and incredibly engaged, even if it meant dragging herself from room to room, over thresholds and steps, making sure to be right by the side of those she loved the most.

She leaves a great big hole in the fabric of our lives. But she also leaves us with the lasting legacy of how powerfully positive a little spirit like hers can be in its determination, grit and boundless joy. If we have learned anything from the gift of having shared her life for these 10 years, it is to give more than you receive, show up even when it’s inconvenient and love every day like it is your last. With great gratitude and grief, we have returned “something precious to the Earth”.

Morning walk through. Visitors arrive to the backyard Soake pool and fireplace project on a series of granite pavers leading off the driveway. The backyard upper lawn expanse lends some cool views back to the patio and hardscape.

We’ve come a long way. From a blank backyard space lacking structure or utility to a Soake pool, patio, outdoor kitchen and two sided fireplace with a copper shroud.
