Apparently, you can take the soil scientist off the job, but you can’t keep him from checking out the soil.

There’s a big project in our town and after driving past the site a few times, we decided to photograph the giant soil pit and investigate the soil horizons.

While most people see a construction site, we see yet another opportunity to learn more about the soils in northern Indiana.

There’s a reason for the orange cone! An exposed septic distribution box isn't something you want people walking over or accidentally stepping into. Until repairs or backfilling can be completed, the area should be clearly marked and protected. Septic systems may be mostly underground, but when components are exposed, a little caution goes a long way.

💧 It’s SepticSmart Week! 💧

A septic system may be out of sight, but it shouldn’t be out of mind. This week is a great reminder that a little care can go a long way toward protecting your septic system, your property and our groundwater.

And if you’re buying land or planning to build, remember that septic planning starts long before the tank goes in. Understanding the soil is an important first step in determining what type of onsite system may be suitable.

You know you're a soil scientist when standing in the rain staring at dirt counts as career development.

Today I traveled to Rensselaer in Jasper County to take part in the Indiana Registered Soil Scientist field exercise and earned field skills continuing education units. The rain made the day a little more challenging, but these exercises lead to more knowledge, better field work and better service for our clients.

Last week, an installer and a property owner called and requested soil borings. With as much traveling as we do covering six counties, we’re always grateful when we get calls from the same area. Not only did these calls come from the same town, they came from the same neighborhood. Turns out these properties were located right next door to each other. It sure was nice to finish one job then walk through that fence’s gate and do another!
