Q: How do you know if you have a culture of safety?
A: Your employees speak up when something seems off, too hard, a procedure is regularly ignored, or someone thinks there might be a better way of doing things.
Q: What does it look like when you don't have a culture of safety?
A: After an incident you hear comments like, "Yeah that didn't seem right for a while now", or "No one ever really follows that procedure; we always do it this way".
One scenario requires communication, trust, and proactive engagement. The other displays a belief that things are just the way they are and there's nothing to do about it.
