I haven't been posting much but boy have I been busy! Things are finally starting to slow down around here.

Wishing Chris Bonk at The Means Project a belated congratulations for obtaining all three Cannabis licenses! I truly can't wait to see this unfold.

What a beautiful day! I noticed some bees nesting in the tubes of my basketball hoop assembly at home.

This reminds me of my days working in the compressed gas industry. Bees and wasps like to nest in the warm little spaces under cylinder caps and in fixtures with openings.

Q: How do you know if you have a culture of safety?

A: Your employees speak up when something seems off, too hard, a procedure is regularly ignored, or someone thinks there might be a better way of doing things.

Q: What does it look like when you don't have a culture of safety?

A: After an incident you hear comments like, "Yeah that didn't seem right for a while now", or "No one ever really follows that procedure; we always do it this way".

One scenario requires communication, trust, and proactive engagement. The other displays a belief that things are just the way they are and there's nothing to do about it.

Intentional safety. What is it? Why is it important?

Intentional safety is the process of using mindfulness and minimizing thoughtless habits to increase lab safety. It is the process of being in the moment, fully present, and an active participant in the day. Mindfulness has been recognized to reduce stress and anxiety and using it to create an environment conducive to safety is the next logical application.

Hello! As we head to the last few months of the year, it often brings thoughts of reflection. My thoughts keep coming back to safety and how this global pandemic has shifted the concept of what is safe. One of the topics I love to speak about is intentional safety. This is the idea that allocating a little bit of mindfulness throughout the day is the most effective way to build safe habits and get people to find the value in safety.
