Earlier this month the Illinois Department of Public Helath issued multiple Double A citations to nursing homes in the Chicagoland area—the most severe violation a facility can recieve, typically involving actions or inactions that directly lead to a resident’s death.

🚨 Nursing Homes Must Meet Minimum Staffing Levels — But Will They? 🚨

One of the most common complaints we hear in our nursing home litigation practice is heartbreaking:

🗣️ “The staff were never around.”
🗣️ “We asked for help, but no one would come.”
🗣️ “I visited often and never saw nurses check in.”

Understaffing in nursing homes is a serious issue, leading to neglect, injuries, and preventable suffering for residents. The federal government has introduced new rules requiring a minimum staffing level to improve care, but enforcement remains a challenge. Even with these regulations, Illinois alone is expected to be short 15,000 registered nurses in 2025.

If you or a loved one are considering a nursing home, do your research:
✅ Ask about staffing levels.
✅ Check for high staff turnover.
✅ Find out if it’s run by a for-profit company.
