One SME. One week. No production team.

That's the scenario I plan for, because that's the scenario I actually live in.

My current four-phase video workflow:

Phase 1: Storyboard in ScreenPal. Get it approved before recording. Phase 2: Record. Screen capture + narrated Canva slide. Captions during, not after. Phase 3: Bring Canva's branded design into the recording. Logo, colors, layout, intentional from the start. Phase 4: Deploy. Rise, Storyline, or a slide deck for live sessions.

Polished output. Real constraints. No gymnastics.

If you're creating video content as a team of one, what does your process look like right now?

Here's the thing nobody talks about when they say "just add screen recording to your course."

You don't have a large scale ID team. You have a deadline, one SME who's already overbooked, and a stakeholder who wants it to look polished.

That's the version I design for too.

This Thursday I'm walking through the exact four-phase workflow I use with real clients: Plan It, Record It, Design It, Launch It. Live demos in ScreenPal and Canva. Real output. No production team required.

If you've been meaning to build screen recordings or more video into your workflow but haven't found a process that actually fits how you work, this one is worth an hour of your time.

Real talk: I used to think good design and tight timelines were in conflict.

Like you could have one or the other, but not both.

This workflow changed my mind.

Canva for visual planning and design. ScreenPal for recording and production.

The branded visuals, the intro card, the section dividers — all of it gets built into the recording from the start. Not added at the end when you're out of time.

The output looks intentionally designed. Because it was.

You don't need a video team to produce something polished. You need a process that builds quality in from the beginning, not as an afterthought.

What tool combo has made the biggest difference in your video production workflow?

Nobody told me the recording was the easy part.

If you've ever had to re-record a video because a stakeholder watched the finished cut and said "oh, that process changed months ago" — this one's for you.

The fix is simple. Not always easy. But simple.

Storyboard first. Get it approved before you hit record.

When stakeholders can see the visual structure instead of reading a script, they give better feedback faster. They catch things. They flag what's changed. You save yourself a full re-record.

Fix it on paper. Not in post.

What does your pre-recording process look like? Do you storyboard before you record, or do you jump straight in?

Tell me below.

Mindset Monday: Your storyboard is not a formality. It’s your protection. The most common reason in-house IDs re-record video content is skipping the storyboard review. Not because they don’t know better, but because the timeline felt too tight for “extra steps.” Here’s the reframe: planning is not extra. It is the step that protects all the other steps. When stakeholders can see the visual structure before you hit record, they give faster, more useful feedback. They catch what changed. You fix it before it costs you an hour. Visible thinking reduces revisions. Every time. This week’s action: Build a five-frame storyboard before your next recording. Intro, content sections, close. Share it before you record. What’s the most common reason you’ve had to re-record something? 👇

One small shift that changed how I work with SMEs:

I stopped sharing storyboards as documents.

Now I share Canva visuals, and here is what changed.

Feedback got specific. Not "I think this needs more detail" but "this frame feels too dense, can we split it."

Comments landed in context. Right on the frame, not in a confusing email thread.

Design decisions happened earlier. When you build with their Brand Kit inside the storyboard, the visual look is right before you have touched a single Storyline slide.

And the big one: fewer rounds of revision after the build.

The visual storyboard is not extra work. It is a step that saves you from redoing work later.

What does your storyboard process look like right now?

Once I stopped blaming the SME and started blaming the format, the revision cycles got so much shorter. This is what I switched to. &D
