Trail Creek Park is a public park located on the east side of Athens, GA. Located in the watershed for Trail Creek, the 120-acre park includes athletic fields, a splash pad, and multi-use trails amidst large areas of forested land. Due to environmental, cultural, and economic factors, the health of the park's forest and watershed is suffering issues such as erosion, invasive species infestations,

and lack of natural diversity. The Trail Creek Park Restoration Project aims to reclaim the ecological and social functions of this land - to rebuild the ecosystem and create a wild space for the community to congregate, connect to nature, and care for the land by facilitating the natural functions of a thriving and productive ecosystem within the park. Guided by the principles of permaculture, some elements of this restoration will include planting a "food forest" to provide for for the human and natural communities alike, establishing connections between surrounding communities and the restoration of the land, and exploring a regenerative approach to long-term management of invasive species on public land. This project is also part of a larger effort to rehabilitate the environmental and social aspects of Trail Creek and the greater Trail Creek watershed.

Hello everyone, Hope you all are having a great new year. I apologize for the lack of activity, but we are excited to get to work in 2018. To that end, I wanted to invite you all to join us on MLK Day for a Day of Service project for some trail building and invasives removal at Stroud Elementary School. More information about the Day of Service and the project at Stroud can be found here:https://uga.givepulse.com/event/65432-H.B.-Stroud-Elementary-School-Nature-Trail-Restoration. If you can't make it, we will be returning both to this site and our sites in the park in the coming weeks. Look forward to seeing everyone and killing some weeds.

The unnamed creek we've been working on is looking much, much healthier. Most of our live stakes have survived! Also, the eroding banks are starting to grown in. Thanks to all our volunteers who continue to come out and heal this little piece of earth.

Prescribed grazing is a technique used to control invasive plant species. The animals eat the foliage of the plants, therby exhausting them of their energy. Usually, the area must be grazed multiple times on a specific schedule to ensure all energy stored in the plant roots is exhausted. We've got sheep from Sheepswork over at the park working on a 1/2 acre section of English Ivy and Chinese Privet - they will be around until 2/13, come check them out!

The sheep have landed at Trail Creek Park! 25 sheep from Sheepswork have been called upon for a prescribed grazing demonstration at the Trail Creek Street Greenway trailhead (right by the Gravel Triangle for you bikers). They will be here eating ivy and privet for the next two weeks - come check em out! BEWARE - their fencing is electric - don't touch!
