Most entrepreneurs build their business long before they truly understand their business model — and that's exactly why so many fail.
Recently, I had the privilege of presenting at a special session organized by Operation HOPE and the Latin American Chamber of Commerce of Georgia (LACC Georgia), where I guided a group of ambitious entrepreneurs through one of the most powerful strategic tools in modern business: the Business Model Canvas (BMC).
Here is the hard truth: a brilliant product is not enough. A passionate team is not enough. Without a clear, structured business model, even the most promising venture will struggle to survive, let alone scale.
The Business Model Canvas is not just a framework; it is a strategic blueprint that challenges every entrepreneur to answer nine fundamental questions about their business:
▶ Who are your customers?
▶ What unique value do you deliver to them?
▶ How will you reach and retain them?
▶ What key activities, resources, and partnerships does your business require?
▶ What does it cost to operate — and how will you generate sustainable revenue?
These are not abstract concepts. They represent the difference between a business that grows and one that simply survives.
I shared a simple but powerful analogy with the audience: entrepreneurship is like navigating the open sea. You may have passion, energy, and an extraordinary crew, but without a rudder, you will inevitably drift off course. Your business model is your rudder.
To bring this to life, we worked through two real-world examples — a bakery business and a lemonade stand — to demonstrate how even the simplest business benefits from structured, disciplined thinking. If you cannot explain how your business creates, delivers, and captures value on a single page, chances are you do not yet understand your business model well enough.
The most successful entrepreneurs do not just work IN their business — they consistently and intentionally work ON their business model.
