Before we judge someoneโs financial choices, we need to look at what choices they have.
Sometimes the problem isnโt that someone wonโt pull themselves up by their bootstraps. The straps might be missing. Itโs easy to look at someone and think, โIf they would just do what I did, theyโd be fine.โ Even if we overcame worse, that doesn't mean nothing is standing in their way.
Are we looking at their full circumstances? Their environment? Their support system? Their access to resources? The responsibilities theyโre carrying?
Someone without a car in a small town may have very different opportunities than someone without a car in a large city. That doesnโt mean they canโt succeed. It means their path may require different choices, resources, and time.
This is especially important when weโre talking about money. Our success and knowledge shouldn't make us think we know what drives someone else's decisions. Before we tell someone emphatically what they โshouldโ be doing, maybe we should first investigate what they are working with.
What say you?
