People and people operations is a third of the core processes of ex*****on. There is also strategy and it’s framework. When coaching your managers be incisive and ask linear questions. Sometimes your managers may feel that regurgitating documented information is useful, but it lacks tact. Data can be a matter of historical events. Strategize with them to recognize data as a story and make decisions based off of the figurative fable.

I’ve been taking a deep dive into behavior assessments and how sophisticated analytics determine your temperament with specific working environments. These tools are not pitted against you and is not a “Mean Girls” strategy to determine if you fit the right personality type your job setting is looking for. While I cannot speak for others ethics, these assessments are used to let your future employer know the following:

- [ ] how you interact with the world and where you direct your energy

- [ ] the kind of information you naturally notice

- [ ] how you make decisions

- [ ] whether you prefer to live in a more structured way (making decisions) or in a more spontaneous way (taking in information)

Assessments do not determine intelligence or predict success, nor do they indicate how well adjusted anyone will be. They do, however, help us discover what best motivates and energizes each of us as individuals, and this in turn empowers us to seek these elements in the work we choose to do. Leverage these tools for YOU.

For companies, unlimited PTO allows employees to rejuvenate more often, which, in turn, decreases burnout and increases productivity... blah blah blah...

While this may be true, it's all about the psyche!

Research shows that employees at companies offering unlimited PTO only take an average of 17 days off per year (just north of three weeks off). What this offering REALLY does is promotes strong morale among its current employees and attracts new talent with the generous benefits package.

In reality, employees are getting something that most companies already offer on an accrual basis BUT your employees feel better about it. Go on... offer the unlimited PTO. Statistics say they won't take that many days off anyway 😏

Generally speaking, I am against the confrontation sandwich. Sometimes feedback needs to be direct and “fluff-free.” Sometimes it needs to be modeled. Often times, it needs to be concrete. I believe in softening the blow of difficult conversations when appropriate, but not doing so with praise. This can lead to an ambiguous message. Similarly, when praising, just praise.

A thought not worthy of correlation: I’ve put these small innocuous emails to the test over the years. Perhaps it’s effective (or not effective) given all other daily strategies I implement, but whenever I ask someone if they have any questions at the end of an email I get questions. If I simply end with a “thank you” I don’t get any questions. 🤷🏾‍♂️

Google founders created a concept called “20 percent time” to let their employees spend one full-day a week (20% of their time) on projects of their choice. They can use this time to educate themselves, embrace their creativity, or try something new.

The idea behind it is pretty simple: Our brain capacity is limited. We sometimes don’t see a simple solution to a challenge because we’ve dealt with it for a while. A mental break boosts innovative thinking. It helps us to see outside of the box and generates ideas.

A personal twist of mine: lead with feng shui 😌

Times are scary. I hope these help.

1. Transparency humanizes you = vulnerability = trust

2. If applicable, be flexible and allow employees to decide how, when, and where to work with the right expectations and optics set by YOU.

3. STAY AWAY and work remote where possible.

4. Tell your employees what’s happening. Share with them what you are considering as your action steps. Include them in these decisions with alignment of CDC guidelines. Tell them again. Text it. Email it. Send phone notifications. They should have a pulse on this as much as you do. Communicate daily changes.

5. Daily exercises of mindfulness helps one process their emotions. Show them what it looks like and allow 10 minutes at appropriate frequencies throughout the day for this.

6. Perception is everything! Employees may not feel safe by something as simple as the type of gloves you provide. Your choice of disinfectant, although in abundance, may not be their preferred brand. Perhaps they feel there aren’t enough garbage pails in the office. Make those minor changes TODAY.

It’s the ability to be six again and create literally anything on stage. Something I encourage us all to do. You can be a space cowboy who’s a salesman if you’d like. I think that’s beautiful. Be six again (in appropriate settings).
