This young bear was hit by a car on 575 in Woodstock. Someone called it in, and we met up with Appalachia Georgia Friends of the Bears. We got him loaded so he could be examined and then laid to rest in a remote location with dignity.
As we were leaving this call, Appalachia Friends of Bears received another report of a deceased bear hit by a car farther north. Last year around this same time, there had been 3 bear fatalities from vehicle strikes. For 2026, we are already at 13.
We are entering bear mating season, which means bears will be much more active from now through early August. During this time, mama bears also push their yearlings off to live independently so they can mate again, and to protect the young bears from aggressive adult males. That means more bears crossing roadways, wandering through neighborhoods, and showing up in places people may not expect.
Please refrain from interacting with bears. Do not stand at the base of a tree trying to take photos of them. (Yes, people actually do this.) Do not feed them pizza off your back deck. (Yes, people actually do this too.) Do not try to pet them. (True story.)
You do not need to contact DNR just because you see a bear outside. However, if you see a bear INSIDE, you should definitely call. 😆
Seriously, unless it's injured or aggressive, please let it be. A fed bear, a habituated bear, or a bear that loses its fear of people often ends up a dead bear.
Slow down. Secure trash and pet food. Give them space. Let them stay wild instead of becoming another statistic.
This incident was most likely a tragic accident. The bear entered the roadway where a high median wall left him with few options. After crossing, the only available path was back into traffic which was also on the side of the fast lane. While there are cases where speed or distraction contribute to these incidents, this happened on a busy interstate where both the bear and drivers had very limited time and space to react.
Thank you to Appalachia Georgia Friends of the Bears for all you do to educate people about these beautiful creatures.
