A client is closing on their law firm today after three decades of ownership. They sent me a text over the weekend sharing their feelings about it all (it is hard emotionally to let go). After my response, this is the text they sent me:

“Thank you for that. This is the kind of nourishment that one could never expect to get from someone who was just a lawyer, just a mentor, just a business negotiator. You didn't need me to tell you this, but you're the Real Deal, the Genuine Article on so many levels. You've been almost family to us over these many months. As much as I've wanted to keep this like Michael Corleone, it hasn't been "just business.". You have our undying gratitude and love. My wish for you is that you receive for yourself at least as much as you've given to us.”

It’s not just business for me or my team. We sincerely want our clients to have a successful exit and enjoy their Life After Law.

One of our members asked — anonymously — “What are the best practice areas to build with an eye on selling it in the future?”

My answer would be — practice areas that have repeat customers, easy to set up a maintenance plan, can largey be automated through systems, and yields high profit margins.

My top 3:
1. Trademark/copyright
2. Business law (non-litigation)
3. Estate planning
