Welcome to September!

This month's literacy focus: asking and answering questions!

Questioning turns growing readers into active, critical thinkers. When learners learn to ask and answer their own questions, curiosity increases and comprehension deepens across every content area:

ELA-R📘: Exploring theme and character motives.

STEAM🧪: Formulating hypotheses and reading data.

Social Studies🌏: Evaluating primary sources and historical facts.

👉🏾 Try this strategy: QAR (Question-Answer Relationships)

Help learners identify answer sources by dividing them into:

In the text📖: Right There & Think and Search

In my head: Author and You & On My Own

🎥 Want to see questioning strategies in action?

The CEC Member Community has two videos dedicated to exploring questioning across learning spaces.

CEC Family,

For the next 2 months in the Children’s Literature Review Series (CLRS), we are diving into our September/October theme: Family History Month!

Family History Month is key for back to school/learning. Why?

As learners ease into the new year, sharing their family histories creates an immediate bridge between home/community and the learning space.

Exploring family origins and structures build community, validate learners' unique identities, and foster deep empathy among peers right from day 1️⃣.

Target Literacy Skill: Asking & Answering Questions❓️

Family stories are full of rich contexts that make important reading comprehension strategies come alive:

🤔 Prompt Curiosity: Encourage learners to ask Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How questions while engaging with family-themed literature.

📖 Deepen Comprehension: Guide learners to search the text and illustrations to find evidence for their responses, turning reading into a discovery process.

🫱‍🫲🏽 Connect Beyond the Page: Have learners formulate interview questions to ask their own family members, bridging reading skills with real-world oral histories.

How to Access the Series:

Ready to explore curated book recommendations, discussion prompts, and lesson integration ideas?

The Children's Literature Review Series is available exclusively to members of the CEC Member Community™️.

Visit www.cletiseducationconsulting.com to join the community and gain full access to this month's resources! 💜💛

This week, we are leveling up our cooperative learning strategies by featuring another widely-used strategy: Write-Pair-Share.

The power of this approach in Knowledge Building is in making thought visible and tangible through writing first. By writing initial ideas, learners increase precision and create a better foundation for collaborative critique and improvement.

It's not just about sharing answers; it's about treating ideas as objects to be examined and refined together.

🎯 Steps for Modeling and Implementation:

1️⃣ Focused Prompt: Provide a specific idea, observation, or question that requires an explanation or synthesis.

2️⃣ Silent Indvidual Writing (Write): Dedicate 3-5 minutes for focused, individual writing. Emphasize that these are "working ideas". The goal is clarity and writing thoughts only.

3️⃣ Partner Exchange & Critique (Pair): Ask partners to exchange their written responses. Then, have them briefly discuss: "What did your partner say that made you think? What's one idea you might add or improve?"

4️⃣ Sharing for the Community (Share): Ask for pairs to share the most insightful point or the most promising improved idea that came out of their discussion. Document these ideas on your Knowledge Building Parking Lot or discussion board.

5️⃣ Connect to Collective Knowledge: Ask, "How did having a written idea from your partner help you look more closely at your own understanding?"

Ask yourself, "Where can I incorporate Write-Pair-Shares in my instruction?"

Share your thoughts in the comments belong 💜💛

Here's a quick review of our Knowledge Building strategies that you can incorporate starting Day 1.

Save this post, and go back to every Knowledge Building post this month to learn another strategy to use in your instruction.

Just a quick reminder: You do not have to implement every strategy. Choose 2-3 strategies to implement and master this year. If you want, choose more!

What's most important is consistency, intention, and dedication.

Knowledge Building creates opportunities for engaging and equitable learning spaces beyond the walls!

It's the CEC Way💜💛.
