CAPABILITY ALONE IS NOT A USE CASE.

I recently came across Pocket, a personal AI assistant designed to capture thoughts, conversations, and ideas while you’re moving through your day.

Interesting? Absolutely.

But before I add another AI tool—or another gadget—to my ecosystem, I ask a different question:

What problem am I actually solving?

I already type.
I already use voice commands.
I already capture notes, ideas, reminders, and conversations in different ways.

So the question isn’t simply:

“Can this technology do something cool?”

It’s:

✅ Where does it fit in my workflow?
✅ What does it replace—or duplicate?
✅ What information is it capturing?
✅ Where does that information go?
✅ Who has access to it?
✅ How is it governed?
✅ And does the value justify adding another tool to manage?

That’s the difference between being impressed by capability and identifying a real use case.

New technology gets my attention.

Strategy determines whether it gets into my ecosystem. 👑

Interesting? Absolutely.

But before I add another AI tool—or another gadget—to my ecosystem, I ask a different question:

When Someone Retires, Their Knowledge Shouldn’t Retire With Them

The files may still be there.

The procedures may still be there.

But the context?

That’s the part that often walks out the door.

Why we do it this way.
The exceptions nobody documented.
The business rules learned through experience.
The known issues.
The workarounds.
The lessons learned over years.

That’s the difference between having information and having usable organizational knowledge.

Somebody said one of the most important human skills in an AI-enabled world is taste.

And immediately, my Caribbean brain went to curry chicken. 😂

AI might know:

Jamaican curry chicken = curry chicken.
Trinidadian curry chicken = curry chicken.

Technically correct.

But if you know curry, you know those are not the same curry chicken. 👀

Different seasoning.
Different techniques.
Different flavor profiles.
Different cultural context.

AI can identify the category.
Human taste recognizes the difference.
And in the workplace, we call that judgment.

That’s exactly what happens when we use AI at work.

AI can generate the email.
Write the draft.
Summarize the meeting.
Create the presentation.
Suggest the strategy.

But somebody still has to know:

Does this sound right?
Does it fit this audience?
Is something missing?
Is it accurate?
Is it appropriate for this situation?

And sometimes…

“Yeah, but whose curry chicken is this?” 😂

That ability comes from experience, context, subject-matter knowledge, cultural awareness, and judgment.

So as AI gets better at generating output, don’t underestimate the value of developing your taste.

Because producing something is one skill.

Knowing whether it’s good is another.
