To everyone stocking shelves, moving freight, driving routes, and keeping the value channel running — thank you.

Retail doesn't work without the people behind it. This Labor Day, we're grateful for the workers in every store, warehouse, and truck who make it possible for brands and shoppers to connect.

From all of us at Southern Professionals — have a safe and restful Labor Day. You've earned it.

It's August. You're thinking about the last few weeks of summer. Retail buyers? They're already deep into spring.

One of the hardest adjustments for a new brand is this: the retail calendar runs months ahead of real life. By the time a season shows up in stores, the decisions that filled those shelves were made a long time ago.

Right now, while the rest of us are firing up the grill:
• Holiday Q4 programs are already locked
• Spring resets are being planned
• Line reviews for future seasons are underway

The brands that win aren't scrambling to catch the current season. They're already working on the next one — sometimes two ahead. Miss the window, and you're not late by weeks. You're late by a full cycle.

Staying ahead of that calendar is a big part of what we do for our clients. Because in retail, "on time" means months early.

Raise your price 5%. Do you gain margin — or lose shoppers?

Most brands guess. And in the value channel, where the shopper watches price closely, guessing is expensive.

This is what price elasticity measures: how much your unit sales move when your price moves. Some items barely flinch at a price bump. Others fall off a cliff. The trick is knowing which is which BEFORE you change the shelf price — not after the sales report tells you.

A simple way to think about it:
• Low elasticity — shoppers keep buying even as price rises. Room to grow margin.
• High elasticity — a small increase sends volume tumbling. Handle with care.

The goal isn't to fear price changes. It's to make them with confidence, backed by analysis instead of gut feel. That's how you protect volume and margin at the same time.

You got the "yes" from the buyer. Congratulations — now the real work begins.

Here's a truth that surprises a lot of new brands: getting the order is only half the battle. The other half is item setup — and it's where more launches stall than anywhere else.

Before your product ever touches a shelf, it has to be built correctly in the retailer's system — SupplierOne, ProsPec, and more. Every dimension, every case pack, every image, every attribute has to be right. On time.

Get it wrong, and the fallout is real:
• Ship dates slip
• POs get delayed or cancelled
• Compliance flags pile up
• That hard-won "yes" quietly stalls out

It's not glamorous work. But clean, accurate, on-time setup is the difference between a launch that lands and one that dies in the details. Decades of doing exactly this is one of the quietest — and most important — things we bring to the table.

Your entire year at a retailer can hinge on a single meeting: the line review.

If you're new to the value channel, here's what every brand should understand about it.

WHAT IT IS — A scheduled category deep dive where the buyer evaluates every item in the category, decides what stays, what goes, and what new items get added. It's your shot to earn (or keep) your place on the modular.

WHEN IT HAPPENS — On the retailer's calendar, not yours. Categories review on a set cycle (typically once per year), and the prep window starts months ahead.

WHAT TO BRING — Clean data, a clear story on why your item earns its space, pricing that works, product samples, and a detailed plan on how you will execute on setup and supply.

THE MISTAKE WE SEE MOST — Treating it like a sales pitch instead of a category solution. Buyers aren't looking for the best pitch. They're looking for what grows the category with an emphasis on "white-space" opportunities.

Walk in ready, and a line review is the biggest opportunity on the retail calendar. That readiness is exactly what we build with our clients.

This Friday is National Dollar Day — but here's something most brands miss: "the dollar channel" isn't one thing. It's three very different retailers, each with its own shopper, strategy, and path to the shelf.

Dollar General — small-format, rural and suddenly-urban reach, built around convenience and the fill-in trip.

Family Dollar — a blend of convenience and value, often serving denser neighborhoods with a broader consumables assortment.

Dollar Tree — the true fixed-price model, where price point drives everything about how an item is built and packed.

Pitch all three the same way, and you'll struggle. Understand what makes each one tick, and you'll build a program that actually fits. That's the work we do every day.

The "value channel" is where some of the highest-velocity retail in America happens.

When people picture Walmart, Sam's Club, Dollar General, Family Dollar, and Dollar Tree, they often think "discount." But here's the reality: these retailers reach more shoppers, in more communities, more often than almost anywhere else in the country. By providing everyday value these retailers help people save — while also giving them a place they can shop week in and week out.

For a growing brand, that means three things:
• Volume — the shelf space moves product fast
• Reach — you land in neighborhoods other channels never touch
• Velocity — the right item, in the right store, sells and re-orders quickly

This is the channel we've lived and breathed since 1979. Understanding how it really works is the first step to winning in it.
