Did you know Catherine Respess of Red Mare dabbles in designing websites for authors?

Of course, horses are to thank for the connection that began with Sasscer Hill, author!

I just wrapped up a website refresh for the incredible cozy mystery author, Leslie Karst. This fun design was originally published in 2015.

Leslie maintains her website but over the past 9 years, she has reached out to me for a few retouches to keep the site looking tidy and fresh. I'm thrilled with how this recent updated turned out!

Besides adding a new mystery series, one of the biggest additions we made to the website was to include short, thrilling excerpts from the books - a idea I learned from TikTok.

I think it really draws you right into the thick of the plot!

^At first glance, this could be considered a great testimonial.

But does it REALLY say anything that would help a prospective client make the choice between you an your competition?

Nope.

It even kinda feels like your client didn't have anything substantial to say about you or your work... but that is not true!

You know so many great examples they could have shared! So many special breakthroughs that you facilitated!

Why oh why didn't they write about all that good stuff?

Why didn't they say,

"After the first session with my horse, I knew I made the right decision to work with ! At first, I struggled with the decision based on pricing, but now I know this transformational work is worth every penny.

I feel so deeply connected with my horse and so aligned with my goals.

When it’s hard to do what needs to be done.

On Monday’s MitM call, we talked about how to do what needs to be done when it’s so easy to get sucked into distractions when we sit down to work at the computer.

When I asked a master in the making, “what is it that pulls you away from the work that would help you reach your goals?”

She mentioned common distractions that we all deal with. That w**d that needs pulling. That article that needs reading. That errand that needs running.

And I get it. I can’t do yoga at home or I will end up sweeping dust bunnies EVERY. DAMN. TIME.

I digress.

There are times when will-power doesn’t have enough umph. So how can we power up our will to do what needs to be done?

I’d like to introduce you to an exercise that I call:

Set the Stage.

I joked on the call that we need to treat the activity like it’s a first date. It’s not exactly a fun experience to put yourself out there with someone new or a task you are avoiding so you have to get yourself in the right mindset.

You want to feel good so you play music to hype yourself up, put on clothes that feel flattering, drink your favorite coffee, and maybe you even do something with your hair, makeup, or jewelry.

The prep is not so much about impressing your date as it is about setting the stage to show up feeling your best… putting your best foot forward.

What I’m suggesting is that when you have a challenging task to accomplish, like maybe:
Making videos…
Reviewing your finances…
A 2-hour yoga session…

Set the stage in a way that allows you to be fully committed in the moment.

I don’t really like to do my hair and put on makeup, so if I take the time to get made up, I’m committed to the videos I need to film. (I REALLY don’t want to have to do my hair and make up again later because I got distracted.)

If I’m sitting down to work on finances, I make myself a favorite hot drink (Four Sigmatic Lion's Mane baby!) and work on my laptop on my bed (surprising?! Well, I need to feel cozy to get really in the zone with spreadsheets… I know what works for me).

To commit to my intense yoga routine, I need to not be tempted to do chores. I HAVE to get out of the house if I’m going to make it through 2 hours of arm balances and pranayama breathwork.

My last thought on setting the stage to power up your will is about the power itself. I noted with my MitM coaching client that she used the phrase, “distractions suck me in and away from what I want to do.”

The words she chose painted a picture of some force outside of her control and let me know that she is GIVING AWAY HER POWER.

On a subconscious level, the distractions had power over her. Power that she GAVE AWAY to the distractions.

Pay attention to how you speak about what holds you back. You might discover that you have so much more power than you realized when you can face how you give your power away.

TAKE IT BACK. Own the places where you leak your personal power. Claim it. Use it. Funnel that energy to set the stage for your success.

How to NOT get sucked into a quagmire and get completely sidetracked when you venture into the murky waters of Facebook, IG, TikTok, and MySpace (kidding on that last one!)

One minute you are on a mission, the next you are watching cat videos and you have no idea where the last hour went or why you logged on to begin with?!?

Instead, I recommend you take steps to clearly DECIDE when, what, and for how long you are going to drop into social media.

I call it: Contain your Intention

When I use the word contain, I’m talking about a start time, a finish time, and a clear decision on what happens in between.

Here’s how:
1. Literally write down what you desire to accomplish when you log in.

Ex. Connect with one person who has a problem I can solve

2. Set a timer or stopwatch (on your phone or other device) and keep in front of you for the duration of the task.

This reminder that you have a singular focus for a short period of time helps keep you grounded in the task and less likely to fly off into distractions.

3. If another desire surfaces while you are executing your intention, don’t act on it at that moment! Add it to the to do list for social media.

Ex. Update my profile cover photo with a graphic that promotes the problems I solve and transformations I provide with a link in the caption/ description to my freebie/ subscriber sign up.

4. Complete the task and schedule time for tasks you added to your list.

I recommend blocking your calendar and overestimating the time each task will take.

You could take action on the newly added tasks immediately but this is also one of those opportunities to practice being in integrity with your schedule.

I hope that helps you to be more effective and efficient when you hop in to social media :)

You were once WILD, don't let them TAME you.

I’m noticing a pattern.

Horse pros come to Red Mare seeking guidance on structuring and growing their business in a NEW way that doesn’t lead to burnout or bankruptcy... and offering this support is SO gratifying for me!

Just today, I coached a student on her unique business blueprint (HOW she makes magic happen with horses) AND how she can roll out that program to her students in a semester subscription format so that:
- Students have access to her knowledge even when they can’t ride
- Her aging lesson horses get plenty of down time
- She gets to spend LOTS of quality time with her family
- AND she has a steady flow of cash

HOWEVER, there are cases when students struggle to find alignment and integrate all the insight we offer here at Red Mare.

These students just can’t seem to find:
- Time to work ON their business
- Energy to make tiny shifts that yield BIG results

I recognize this pattern because I was once stuck in it.
