Meet our most stubborn sawmill apprentices! 🐐🪵

At our custom sawmill and kiln farm in Canton, GA, there is never a dull moment. Before we can turn your fallen trees into beautiful, usable lumber, we usually have to clear our four-legged “inspectors” off the log deck! I had to ask them if they were ready to saw some logs before finally telling them to clock out and get out of the way. 😂

While the goats keep us thoroughly entertained, our real passion is custom milling and kiln drying logs for local landowners, builders, and woodworkers. Whether you are clearing everyday pine trees for a new build or saving a sentimental oak to turn into heirloom furniture, we love helping turn your fallen trees into a story.

From slicing the logs on our bandsaw mill to carefully sterilizing them in our professional lumber kiln, we handle the whole process to ensure your wood is perfectly dried and ready for your home.

Did you know beautiful reclaimed wood can hide a destructive secret? 🪲🪵

Recently, a homeowner in Atlanta realized that Powder Post Beetles were eating away at the beautiful antique barn beams inside her house! These pesky bugs may have come from dormant eggs that can hide deep inside the wood for years before finally hatching. Full disclosure - We don't know if that is what happened in this particular case for sure.

She brought the beams to our Canton, GA kilns to save them. Here is how we did it: 🔥 We loaded her beams into our custom kiln and heat-treated them for 5 straight days. 🔥 By sustaining high temperatures long enough for the heat to reach the dead center of the thick wood, we permanently eliminate both active bugs AND their dormant eggs. 100% sterilized and safe!

We were thrilled to help this homeowner save her historic beams (and we are so grateful for the glowing 5-star review she left us!). ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

What is all over these boards? These boards came out of our kiln recently. They are reclaimed Heart Pine that we re-sawed into boards for flooring. But before they could become floors, they had to spend 7 days in our kiln baking at 160 degrees.

Why so hot? We had to “Set the Pitch.”

Heart Pine is packed with thick, sticky sap (called pitch). If we didn’t bake it, that sap could eventually seep out and ruin the floors. By cooking it at 160 degrees, the sap crystallizes inside the wood. This does two amazing things: 1️⃣ It makes the wood rock-hard and incredibly durable. 2️⃣ It stops the sap from gumming up the heavy machinery used to cut the tongue and groove shapes.

Take a look at the video - some boards look like the wood was dipped in glossy epoxy! That is pure, natural pitch that baked onto the surface in the kiln. 🤯

Interesting facts. These boards originally came from trees that grew in the 19th century. They were used to build an old house and a barn, and now, they are being transformed into gorgeous tongue and groove flooring!

From fallen trees to the walls of one of Woodstock’s newest restaurants! 🌲➡️🍽️
A local customer recently brought us some Pine logs they had to clear from a lot in Woodstock. Instead of tossing them, they decided to repurpose the wood for a brand-new restaurant being built in downtown Woodstock called Noonday.

Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how we made it happen at our Canton mill: 🪵 First, we custom milled the logs into 1x12s. Then kiln-dried and sterilized them. 🪵 Wood has natural internal stressors, so during the drying process, some boards curved slightly. Additionally, the boards shrink slightly during the drying process. 🪵

Since the customer wanted perfectly straight “Nickel Gap” boards for their walls, we went to work! We straight-line ripped one side, ran them through a gang rip machine to get a true 1x10, and planed them down for a nice finish.

The best part? Our standard custom mill and kiln-dry rate for 4/4 Pine is $1.50/board foot for rough sawn boards. Because we surfaced these boards on all 4 sides so the contractor didn’t have to do it on the job site, the final price was $2.25/board foot. Even with the four sided surfacing, this beautiful, locally sourced wood was $9 cheaper per board than buying it at a big box store! 🤯

How did we do on the book matched slabs? A new restaurant in downtown Woodstock is putting in a 20 foot long bar and is looking for a certain look. We spent a couple hours surfacing on four sides 4 12' long, book matched slabs for them.

We have a tight deadline to turn around some Nickel Gap boards for a restaurant in downtown Woodstock, Georgia. We only have one kiln that will work and we have to squeeze everything in there or we will miss the deadline. We are loading our Nyle Dry Kilns L200Pro. It has a 'Hybrid' function that allows us to 'over load' the kiln with extra Pine. In our other two kilns, the maximum Pine we can put in there at a time is 1,500 board feet. With this Pro kiln, it can handle about 1,000 more.

We recently milled up a huge order of trailer decking. In the process, there were certain boards that would work great for woodworkers, but not for trailer decking. So, we stacked and stickered them to let them airdry. The boards are 5/4 (1.25 inches thick). They will most likely go into the kiln to be kiln dried here in Canton Georgia sometime around December, depending on the weather. If you might be interested in any of these, let us know. It is a mixture of Red and White Oak
