Meriwether Millworks, LLC From Fallen Trees to Stories

The City of Roswell is working on a new park project. Unfortunately they had to take down some trees for their project, but they did not want the trees to be wasted. Thankfully we were able to help. We are custom milling the trees so the can be re-used in the development in a new and unique way. In a way, the trees are not leaving the site, just receiving a second life.

Sometimes you just have to roll with the punches. While milling up a customer's log, we hit a huge piece of metal. It destroyed the saw blade teeth, caused the sawblade to drift upwards, and get lodged in the log. We had to remove the sawblade from the sawhead just to get in there with a chainsaw and cut out the sawblade. We wound up removing the entire log from the mill because this was the third large piece of metal in the same log we struck. Based on the kind of log this was, it was not worth continuing to loose blades on this one log. Based on our past experience, we surmised that there was more metal in this log. So, we will find another use for the log later and the customer will not be charged for the log.

One of the things we do is custom mill & kiln dry timbers for Timber Frame structures. In this case, contractor used traditional Timber Frame joinery to build a classic outdoor space for the homeowner.

The contractor gave us several months notice so that we had the time to source the right logs for the job. The structure had White Oak for the posts and Southern Yellow Pine for the beams. Once we had the logs, we milled them and let them air dry for a couple months before moving them into the kiln. We only needed to get the moisture content on the Pine down to 12% because it was going to be outside anyways. At the end of the cycle, we sterilized the lumber to make sure any dormant insect eggs were killed. For the White Oak, we could not get it down much on moisture content, but we were able to heat treat it for insects.

100% Georgia grown and Georgia made. While talking with one of our woodworking customers last week, we realized that our customers' products are not only made right here in Georgia, but the components are actually grown right here too. We mill up trees grown here in Georgia. In many cases, trees that grew up in homeowner's yards. How cool is that!?!

A few months ago we helped out a young couple with their wedding. We turned Poplar live edge slabs into benches for their wedding. We delivered them the day before the wedding and picked them up after the wedding was over.

The nice thing about Poplar slabs is that they are light and easy to move. They created a different, more rustic look than your standard chairs. They are also relatively inexpensive, which is a huge help when you are doing a wedding on a budget. We had milled these up and kiln dried them a couple of years ago and were looking for the right opportunity to use them. If you have Poplar trees on your land and not sure what you can use them for, just give us a call and we can discuss with you the options.

Pulling 1,000 board feet of Poplar out of the kiln with about 1,500 pounds of concrete blocks on the top. It just barely clears the roof! The Kubota R540 is getting things done. Plantation Moulding and Millwork will turn these boards into centermatch tongue and groove boards to go into a customer's custom barndominium.

Are the Walnut Slabs ready to come out of the kiln? Before we pull the slabs off the kiln carts, we make sure they have been dried to the proper moisture content. Sometimes we have to put the lumber back into the kiln because it is not quite ready. Every tree is slightly different, even if we are dealing with all the same species.

A husband and wife wanted to build on the land they owned in Blue Ridge, Georgia. They had two goals they wanted to achieve. Thankfully, we were able to help them with both.

First, they wanted to build a relatively small home to keep the costs and upkeep lower, but they also wanted that same house to stand out in some way. They did not want it to be like all the other homes. Making your home stand out while still being within a modest budget can be a challenge.

Second, they wanted to be wise stewards of their resources. The spot where they wanted to build was full of Hickory trees. . . lots of them. They wanted to be able to have those Hickory trees sawed up to be used in their home. That is where we came in.

The Hickory logs will milled into 1x7 boards. We then stacked and stickered them to air dry for a couple months. From there, we moved them into one of our kilns to finish the drying process and kill any dormant insect eggs.

Once the boards were finished, we took the dried boards to one of our service partners, who took the 1x7's and finished them as 5 inch wide tongue and groove boards. The finished result was both beautiful and unique. It allowed their home to stand out while using the timber from their own land. In one sense, the trees never moved. They were just transformed into flooring.

Want to be a wise steward of your resources? We can help! Just reach out to us for a free phone consultation.
