Happy Holidays to all! Although the holidays always brings cheer to me, my friends and family, we must remember the families that have children with autism and what it means to them. Many children with ASD find the chaos and merriment too much and become distressed with all the noise and crowds. I remember my former students who absolutely loved Christmas and began singing holiday songs in September, but once the holiday actually came, were very distressed with all that was happening. Classrooms and homes looked different with the holiday trimmings; people came and went without warning; requirements for shopping were higher and music was everywhere- sometimes either too loud, or repetitive. It took love and patience to help them through the exciting days backed up with lots of visual supports and preparation. Holidays can be joyful and something to look forward to when parents and teachers plan ahead to meet their child’s needs. With only a few days left to Christmas and New Year’s, preparations and explanations should be kicking into high gear. Here is to a calm, wonderful and happy holiday season from this consultant! 😊
