Gwen Woodard Fitness Personal Training EXCEPTIONAL PERSONAL TRAINING SERVICES IN THE ATLANTA AREA I would LOVE to call myself your trainer! I'm certified. I'm insured. I know CPR.

The benefits of regularly completing customized workouts with a personal trainer as enthusiastic and qualified as I am are just about infinite. Best of all, I recognize that each client has unique goals and concerns, and I tailor all sessions accordingly. My training style is pretty eclectic; I mix things up by planning specific workout themes based on a variety of factors. For instance, you might

show up to a session ready for a full-body workout and find that every move I instruct you to do involves a particular piece of equipment (a medicine ball, for example) while toning you from head to toe, or you might show up to a session with the intent of focusing on sculpting your shoulders and discover that I’ve created a challenging shoulder circuit that breaks up the monotony of a traditional strength-training workout. As my standard rate, I offer a 45-minute session for $30. If you need a shorter or longer session, however, we can adjust the price. For a limited time, I’m offering a $5 per-session discount to Agnes Scott College students, graduates, faculty and staff. At this time, the ASC discount is the only one I can extend. Location-wise, I can meet you wherever we agree is a good venue. If you have a community gym in the subdivision or apartment complex where you live or if you belong to a local gym that doesn’t have a problem with a visiting trainer, those scenarios are ideal! However, I own plenty of portable equipment and can train you elsewhere, too – at a public or private location, depending on how well I know you. Please e-mail me or call me to schedule an appointment. I can answer any questions you might have. You should also feel free to post general inquiries to the wall of this site; someone else might be in need of the same information! Also, if you know anyone in a fitness rut, or anyone who wants to get stronger, or anyone who’s eager to lose weight, please refer that person to me!

The other day, I received a Facebook reminder that I’ve hit the ten-year mark as a certified personal trainer. This past decade has flown by! The two best components of my side career have been working with wonderful people and gaining flexibility in my work schedule. Whether my rotation of clients has included 13 people or just one, whether I’ve worked for a gym or for myself, I’ve enjoyed the journey. What an amazing experience this has been!

Happy holiday season, everyone! I’m ditching the Thanksgiving tips and discounts I usually share this time of year in order to enjoy the four-day weekend a little more completely, but rest assured, Gwen Woodard Fitness still exists.

Five Pointers for a Great Workout During the Pandemic:

1) Make the most of the resources you have. Dust off the free weights or yoga mat in your storage area and set up a home gym. Seek out seldom-used stairs* in your apartment complex or challenging hills in your subdivision. Grab a (sturdy) folding chair for dozens of moves.
2) Respect your current fitness level. Don’t try to go from zero to 100. If you haven’t gone on a walk in six months, now isn’t the time to train for a marathon. Aim for a level of activity that won’t land you in the hospital. The avoidance of injuries is more important right now than ever since we need to preserve ambulances, medical teams, and hospital beds for those who need them the most!
3) Set goals, but keep them realistic. Consult your physician (whether by e-mail, tele-medicine, etc...) to make sure you’re embarking on a plan consistent with your personal health status. Common sense goes a long way, too!
4) Use your personality to your advantage. Are you a planner? Map out a month’s worth of workouts. Do you miss your five best friends? Plan a virtual group fitness session. Do you take things day by day? As you eat breakfast, bookmark a workout routine you want to try, and knock it off your to-do list at some point before dinner. Are you all about some “me time”? Tell your housemates you’re booking the den / basement / spare bedroom from 5pm to 5:30pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays for your workouts and that they need to find somewhere else to be during those times.
5) Don’t forget the basics. Warm up with five minutes of cardio before a strength-training session. Stay hydrated. Do your dynamic (consistently moving) stretches BEFORE you work out, and save your static (holding in place) stretches for AFTER the workout. Exhale while lifting. Inhale while lowering. If your form is still perfect 15 reps in, you need to add more resistance.

There are so many good workouts and fitness plans online right now that I hesitate to even start listing them, but if you’re looking for something specific, from strength training to yoga to kickboxing, I can try to point you in the right direction. I have a lot of friends in the industry who have released amazing videos you can stream. I’ll also customize a single workout or an entire fitness plan for you if you want to PM me regarding your needs and budget. Stay safe!

*Don’t forget to wash your hands thoroughly if you touch the stair rail or any other shared surface in your community.

Just an update for all my Greenville/TR area followers: Sterling and I are still in the vegan snack food industry, providing plant-based alternatives to those who want to experience the food truck atmosphere without the pressure of chosing either hot dogs or going hungry via our Rabbit Food Bike. In all fairness, many of the other vendors in rotation at Music in the Park have some amazing good-for-you options, such as veggie tacos, Brussels sprouts, Thai-inspired bowls, etc... but you should still drop by our booth tonight if you're in the area! I'll have some more fitness-centric posts soon. Stay tuned!

Rabbit Food will be vending tonight as our last appearance of the season. Come out to Trailblazer Park to taste some of our treats and enjoy music by The Night Affair band. Plan for a fun night with your family, old friends, or that special someone!

GWEN-COURAGEMENT:

"The final transition happened suddenly, unlike the lead-up to it. One day, after months of painstakingly careful squats, I discovered I could do 50 repetitions without pain. I bumped that number up to 60, then 70, still without pain. I quit at 75 out of respect for my healing body. My newly regained ability to perform a very basic core exercise inspired confidence to try something else I hadn't done in years – sit on the couch. It might sound minor, but after three years of not being able to use furniture like a human, I really wanted to rejoin the normal world."
-Victoria Stopp in her new book, "Hurting Like Hell, Living with Gusto"

To all my followers: this is a must-read nugget of inspiration! When my college friend Victoria decided to seek out a life of adventure and altruism by becoming an emergency medical technician, she had no way of knowing that her everyday life would swiftly become affected by a dangerous duo of injuries received on the job. I'm utterly humbled by her relentless approach to sensible pain management while suffering from chronic discomfort as documented in the appropriately-named "Hurting Like Hell, Living with Gusto". Even more impressive is Victoria's dedication to staying active despite severe limitations. As I finished reading her book, I was sidelined by a basic Winter cold and the classic self-pity that accompanies such an ailment. By the time I finished the memoir, I was TOTALLY GRATEFUL for my overall health. One of the best lessons I learned from this read is that there's almost always SOMETHING that can be done in the name of fitness, no matter how seemingly small, when we find ourselves tempted to make excuses about bad knees, lame weather, lack of time, etc... Strength doesn't come from our natural abilities; it comes from finding a way to OVERCOME our obstacles.

Please see the comments for a link to the book that has earned a treasured space on my bookshelf.

GWEN-LIGHTENMENT: You can give your physical traits a sense of purpose in the gym by correlating your strengths and “weaknesses” to an aptitude towards specific sports. This quiz may be no more accurate than those career-based ones we all took in grade school as far as what we’re “built to do” vs. what we actually enjoy, but for entertainment purposes, take it and let me know in the comments if you learned anything new!

Celebrate your stubby legs, your spider-monkey arms, your giant feet! Nearly every body has Olympic traits.
