On May 8, the Ensuring Lasting Smiles Act (ELSA) was reintroduced in Congress — a bipartisan bill requiring private health plans to cover medically necessary services for individuals born with congenital anomalies or birth defects. This includes adjunctive dental, orthodontic, and prosthodontic treatments.

This is more than just policy news — it’s a wake-up call for dental practices.

Too often, patients with legitimate medical needs tied to oral health are forced to delay or forgo treatment because their care isn't billed correctly, or at all, to medical insurance. ELSA aims to change that by formally recognizing the medical necessity of certain dental procedures.
