It is the fragrant or pungent (depending on who you ask) scent of the bright yellow and orange cempasΓΊchil (marigolds) that guide spirits of the deceased to visit loved ones for a short time each year. Sometime petals are scattered outside the home, leading to the altar inside, where flowers are placed along with food, photos and personal items of the deceased.

The tradition dates back to pre-Hispanic Aztec times in which the goddess Mictecacihuatl, or the Lady of the Dead, allowed spirits to visit family and friends on Earth. The tradition as we know it today, has been blended with the Roman Catholic observance of All Saints Day by the Spaniards when they conquered Mexico.
