Leadership and Women

Leadership and Women Intelligent stories about intelligent women leaders. Insights, inspiration and career advice. This is not about feminism or affirmative action.

I decided to start a social movement to encourage women to take stronger leadership roles in the business world. This is about creating an inspiration for our women (our friends, our daughters, our wives, our employees) to be something more than a barbie, a Disney princess, or a Kim Kardashian! We want more women who are scientists, start-up founders, senior executives, or Venture Capital investor

s. I want to make women believe that they can be whatever they want. Help me move this cause forward. Join this page and share inspirational stories that you may run into.

Many leaders make the mistake of delegating something too early and then get frustrated when the task isn't completed to their satisfaction.
Your capacity to delegate, however, very much depends on the person's skill level and motivation. I adapted the model of situational leadership to create the following matrix I used in my last training program.

When skill and motivation are low (common for administrative/operational tasks and junior employees), you have to be very instructive about how to do something step-by-step.

When skill level is low but motivation is high, until they build up skills, the role of the leader is one of a coach who guides the employee, helping them recover when they make a mistake, cheering on them when they do something well.

When skill level is high but motivation is low, the leader's role is to sell the project in order to increase motivation levels, "What's in it for them?", why is it important and relevant?

Motivation is high and skill is high? Time to delegate and step aside!

This year I had several women reach out to me to share their concerns about exceeding expectations at work and getting almost no recognition for it. This is what I call "The Good Girl Trap": Doing all the dirty work, taking on more responsibilities and being told to wait because "this year was tough" or because "you're almost there, but maybe next year." Bosses love having the good girl around and don't feel pressure to promote her.

There is an easier way to escape this trap and get others to see you as an invaluable resource they must work hard to keep. You need to strengthen your strategic influence skills and build the right network.

At this point I have helped tens of women to get bigger roles, more confidence, more money, higher results and recognition from their peers and superiors and I am confident I can help you too.

Influence is about selling yourself and your ideas more effectively, in the short term and in the long term.
