What if your trust transferred more than your assets?

Family business owners spend decades building something of value. But what they build includes more than enterprise value. It includes convictions.
Sacrifice. Relationships. Wisdom. Purpose.

Estate planning often asks: “How do we transfer the assets?”

Mission-driven planning asks another question: “How do we transfer the purpose behind them?”

That distinction matters.

A trust can be more than a vehicle for wealth transfer. Properly designed within a broader legacy strategy, it can help reinforce stewardship, responsibility, generosity, and the principles a family wants to carry forward.

The goal isn't to control future generations. It is to give them a compass pointing north.

Because a lasting legacy isn't simply about what the next generation receives. It's about what they learn to steward.

Mission-Driven Trusts — A Trust Should Carry More Than Assets

🦬 BE THE BISON SHOUT OUT: PHYLLIS SNODGRASS

Today we give a shout-out to Phyllis Snodgrass—a leader who has spent decades strengthening organizations, building communities, and lifting others along the way.

From leading Austin Habitat for Humanity to now serving as a C12 Chair in Central Texas for Christian CEOs and business owners, Phyllis demonstrates what it means to lead with conviction, grace, and purpose. Her impact across Central Texas is a powerful reminder that the best leaders don't simply build successful organizations—they build people and communities that endure.

Phyllis, thank you for being a community builder, faithful guide, and champion for others.

Every leader eventually enters a season they never would have chosen.

After serving alongside Josh McDowell for 24 years, Bob Tiede faced the end of a significant chapter in his leadership journey. It was the kind of transition that could easily have produced resentment.

Then a mentor asked him one simple question: “What did you learn from him?”

That question changed the story Bob was telling himself.

Instead of dwelling on what had ended, he documented 62 lessons he had learned from Josh and presented them to Josh’s family as a Christmas gift. A painful ending became an expression of gratitude.

Leaders cannot always choose the seasons they enter—but we can choose what we carry forward from them.

Gratitude doesn’t deny disappointment or eliminate the need for honest reflection. It helps us recognize what we gained alongside what we lost.

That choice can protect our hearts, preserve important relationships, and prepare us for what God may be building next.

Who helped shape your leadership?

Take 15 minutes this week to write them a thoughtful note. Be specific about what they taught you. The gratitude you express may encourage them—and bring greater freedom and perspective to you.

Hear more of Bob’s story on the "Be the Bison" podcast.

I want to recognize Gavin Gillas, a mission-led founder who is tackling one of the most important—and often overlooked—challenges of the AI era: protecting the digital creators whose work fuels innovation.

As AI rapidly transforms how digital content is created and consumed, Gavin is building a new venture that helps independent publishers, local news organizations, bloggers, and content creators defend their intellectual property. His approach is both practical and bold—creating a coalition that seeks fair licensing agreements with AI companies while providing a path to legal action when creators' rights are violated.

What stands out is that Gavin isn't simply building another AI company. He's working to ensure innovation and integrity can coexist by advocating for those who often lack the resources to protect their digital property and brand.

His heart for service is evident beyond this venture. As co-founder and board member of Giving Docs, Gavin has helped more than 800 nonprofits facilitate over $1 billion in planned gifts through accessible estate planning technology—equipping organizations to build long-term sustainability while serving their communities.

This is the kind of leadership we celebrate through venture + philanthropy: seeing a challenge others avoid, moving toward it with courage, and creating solutions that strengthen people and institutions for generations to come.

If Gavin's mission resonates with you—whether you're an investor, attorney, publisher, nonprofit leader, or simply passionate about the future of ethical AI—I encourage you to connect with Gavin to learn more about the important work he's leading.

I want to recognize Dan Mannion, a consequential leader and mission-led founder who is reimagining how organizations listen to the people they serve.

After years of building large-scale customer experience solutions, Dan saw a fundamental problem: most contact centers make decisions based on reviewing just 1–2% of customer interactions. Through his AI startup, he's changing that by analyzing 100% of calls, chats, and emails to uncover actionable insights that help organizations improve service, strengthen customer relationships, and make better decisions.

What impressed me most wasn't just the technology—it was the traction. In a short time, Dan and his start-up team have deployed their platform across seven contact centers serving organizations like the University of Phoenix and Stanford University, proving that AI can move beyond automation to deliver meaningful business intelligence.

This is the kind of mission-driven innovation we value in the Venture + Philanthropy network: using technology to solve real problems, equip organizations with better information, and ultimately create better experiences for the people they serve.

Dan is currently completing the final phase of his pre-seed raise and is looking to connect with angel investors and leaders in higher education, retail, hospitality, and e-commerce who want deeper customer insights.

I encourage you to connect with Dan Mannion, learn more about the mission he's advancing, and explore how you might support or collaborate with his growing venture.
