Increase Your College Student’s Credit Score
Here is an easy way to increase your college student’s credit score. Capital Budget Strategies LLC, Austin’s best Financial Coach, has personally used this method and our student graduated college with a credit score over 800!
First a warning: When your freshman arrives at college, they will be inundated with pre-approved credit card offers. Make sure your student does NOT get a credit card! Credit card companies know junior will most likely miss a payment and then must pay 21% and higher on the balance. That is big money for Visa!
Two of the factors credit rating agencies use to determine a credit score are (1) the length of time someone has had credit available, and (2) their payment history.
Here is an idea for parents to build a high credit score: Go to NerdWallet’s website and find a suitable credit card for someone with low or no credit history. Then, in agreement with your student, get a credit card in their name only. However, YOU, the parent, keeps the credit card and uses it only for gas in your vehicle or some other frequent, but inexpensive, charge. Then set up an autopayment from an account so you, and thereby your student, never miss a payment.
Upon graduation in 4, 5 or 6 years, your student will have a years-long history and have never missed a payment. Happy graduation!
For only $149, the Money Coach at Capital Budget Strategies, LLC, can also help you or your student become financially organized. Together, we will create an Emergency Fund, a Survival Fund, review your retirement savings, build a personized monthly Budget and a Snowball Debt Repayment Plan, if needed, to pay off credit card debt, student loans, etc.
Your student will have enough pressure at college to worry about, do not let building personal credit add to it. Capital Budget Strategies, LLC, is here to help!
